Aiming to build stronger military ties with Oman, Defence Secretary Shashikant Sharma is on a two-day visit to the Gulf country. During the visit, Sharma met the top military and political leadership of Oman and discussed ways of further strengthening the military relations between the two sides, Defence Ministry officials said here. The visit assumes significance in view of efforts on part of both the countries to strengthen their defence ties as Defence Minister A K Antony had travelled to Muscat couple of years ago and his counterpart visited here in 2011. The two sides had also decided to expand cooperation in fields ranging from maritime security and anti-piracy measures to joint training and combat exercises.

Seeking to strengthen defence ties with Australia and Myanmar, Defence Minister A K Antony would be visiting these countries in the next few weeks. The first visit would be to Myanmar on January 22-23 where he is likely to take up issues of building capability of the Myanmarese armed forces, Defence Ministry officials said here. The two countries share over 1,600 km long boundary and are also working on an MoU on border management and coordination, they said. India may agree on imparting training to the Myanmarese Air Force personnel on their Russian Mi-35 attack choppers, which are operated by the IAF also.

Major Indian private and public sector players including Tata, Mahindra, L&T and BEL are holding parleys with DRDO for developing an indigenous advanced artillery howitzer for the Army. The premier defence research agency recently held an interaction with the stakeholders to explore the feasibility of involving Indian industries in the development of Advance Towed Artillery Guns System (ATAGS), DRDO officials said. "Objective of the interaction was to explore and encourage participation of Indian industries in the ATAGS project and generate a base for its design, development, manufacturing and integration," they said.

With the Government freezing the acquisition of Tatra trucks, the defence forces have started looking for alternative vehicles to equip them with their missile systems. In view of Defence Ministry's decision to put on hold the procurement of Tatra trucks pending the CBI probe into allegations of bribery by former Army Chief Gen VK Singh, several key missile projects of the Army and the Air Force have been held up. The armed forces are looking at trucks being offered by manufacturers from Russia and Belarus including the Volat trucks being offered by a Belarusian firm, defence sources said.

Nepal Army chief General Gaurav Shamsher Rana will be conferred the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army by President Pranab Mukherjee when he will be in India on an eight-day official visit beginning January 7. It is a custom between the two armies to confer this honour on each other's chief since 1965 to signify their close military-to-military ties. The rank conferring investiture ceremony will be held on January 8 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Presidential Place on Raisina Hills here, Indian Army officers said here. Indian Army chief General Bikram Singh was conferred the rank if General of the Nepal Army when he had visited the Himalayan nation in July this year.
