India, Russia to Sign Key Defence Deals worth $4 Billion

India and Russia are preparing to sign three key defence deals worth $4 billion when Russian President Vladimir Putin comes to New Delhi for a summit meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on December 24. Among the deals planned for inking including the final contract for licenced production of 42 Su-30MKI planes by Indian government-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, purchase of 71 Mi-17V5 medium lift helicopters and 970 AL-31 aero-engines for the Sukhoi combat aircraft. India Tests Prithvi-II N-Capable Missile

India has successfully tested its Prithvi-2 indigenous nuclear-capable ballistic missile from a test range off Odisha coast in the Bay of Bengal, in what is termed as an user-trial by the nation's strategic forces that handle nuclear weapons. The 350-km-range surface-to-surface missile blasted off from a mobile launcher at the launch complex of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) of Chandipur-on-sea in Balasore district, around 230 km from Bhubaneshwar, Odisha's capital. DRDO To Develop Indigenous AWACS

India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has proposed to develop an indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS), described as an 'eye-in-the-sky' force multiplier that can keep a watch on enemy military activity, aircraft getting airborne or missile being fired. Defence Minister AK Antony informed the Indian Parliament on the DRDO proposal to begin work on the project called AWACS (India). "The project proposal for indigenous development of AWACS (India) has been submitted by the DRDO for government approval," Antony said in a written reply to a question from members of the Council of States. DAC Approves 22 Cheetal Choppers For Army

With the armed forces marred by long delays in replacing the vintage Cheetah/ Chetak choppers, Defence Ministry has approved a proposal to procure around 22 Cheetal helicopters for Army. The Army is planning to deploy these choppers for supporting its high altitude operations in Ladakh and Siachen. A meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the apex Ministry body headed by Defence Minister A K Antony to decide on procurements, cleared the proposal to procure around 22 Cheetal choppers for Army, Defence Ministry officials said. Artillery tender scrapped third time in ten years

The Defence Ministry has cancelled a tender for procuring 180 self-propelled wheeled artillery guns for the Army, Defence Minister A K Antony informed Rajya Sabha today. Three tenders for procuring the gun have been cancelled in the last ten years. "The Request for Proposal (RFP) for procurement of 180 howitzers has been cancelled in 2012, for the third time in past ten years," he said in written reply to a query. The Minister said the RFP was cancelled this year as both the firms participating in the tender were not able to meet the parameters. Read More...
