Army Shortlisted Companies for Its Rs 8,000 Crore Plan For Assault Rifles

In its bid to provide state-of-the-art rifles to infantry jawans, the Army shortlisted five companies for its Rs 8,000 crore plan to acquire assault rifles for its Infantry troops. The first induction on the cards is 60,000 assault rifles with the Army having completed user trials last fortnight of five guns, including Beretta (US), IWI (Israel), Sig-Sauer (Switzerland), Colt (US) and Ceska (Czech Republic) and the technical evaluation about to commence shortly, Army officials said here. India, Maldives Hold Joint Army Exercise

India and its Indian Ocean neighbour Maldives have begun a joint army training exercise that is aimed at enhancing the close military ties between the two nations. The fortnight-long exercise, codenamed Ekuverin-2012, is being held at Belgaum in Karnataka. A total of 45 personnel from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) are taking part in the fourth edition of the exercise along with an equal number of personnel from the Indian Army. Army Chief to Brief PM on Hollowness

Faced with a glaring shortage of critical weapon systems and ammunition, Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh will brief Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the "hollowness" faced by the 1.3 million-strong force in its Defence preparedness. Gen Bikram Singh will make a presentation before the Prime Minister about the "hollowness" faced by the force and the steps needed to do away with them in the next few weeks, government sources said. India Seeks Details from UK on VVIP Chopper Deal

India has sought details from the UK in connection with corruption allegations in the VVIP helicopter deal with Italy and "strong action" would be taken in case any foul play is detected in the procurement process, Defence Minister A K Antony said today. "The contract is with a particular company based in the UK. We have also requested MEA to take up the case with UK. We are making all efforts to find the truth in media reports," he said when asked about the progress in the case. The Minister was interacting with reporters on sidelines of an IDSA awards ceremony. No Budget Cut for Critical Defence Purchases

Even as his Ministry is preparing itself for curtailment of funds, Defence Minister A K Antony today said there will be no cut in budget for procuring equipment essential for operational preparedness of armed forces. "Everything depends on the entire financial situation of the government...for ammunition and platforms essential for operational preparedness of the armed forces, there would not be any cut," he told reporters on the sidelines of an IDSA function here. The Minister was asked if there would be delays in the procurement of weapon systems for armed forces due to economic slowdown and austerity measures. Read More...
