CCS Clears Rs 2,150 Cr Coastal Security Proposal

A proposal to the tune of Rs 2,150 crore for enhancing coastal security to prevent 26/11 type attacks has been cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). The CCS meeting, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, cleared proposals worth Rs. 2,150 crore under which five offshore patrol vessel would be brought for the Coast Guard for Rs. 1,500 crore, defence sources said here. As part of the proposals, Rs. 640 crore would be spent on setting up the second phase of coastal security network under which 38 radars would be established to create a "near-gaffe free electronic surveillance along the entire coastal area". Artillery tender scrapped third time in ten years

The Defence Ministry has cancelled a tender for procuring 180 self-propelled wheeled artillery guns for the Army, Defence Minister A K Antony informed Rajya Sabha today. Three tenders for procuring the gun have been cancelled in the last ten years. "The Request for Proposal (RFP) for procurement of 180 howitzers has been cancelled in 2012, for the third time in past ten years," he said in written reply to a query. The Minister said the RFP was cancelled this year as both the firms participating in the tender were not able to meet the parameters. Read More...

British-Built New Hovercraft Inducted By Indian Coast Guard

The Indian Coast Guard has till now inducted three of the 12 new Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs), designed and built by British firm Griffon Hoverworks Limited, with the successful induction of the second vehicle in the series, ICGS H-188, at Haldia in West Bengal. The first and the third vehicles in the series, H-187 and H-189, were inducted in June and November this year at Okha in Gujarat under the administrative and operational control of the Commander Coast Guard Region (North-West). Indian Army to Deploy Armed Helos with Rudra Ready for Induction

The Indian Army is preparing to induct and deploy armed helicopters in its key formations facing Pakistan and China, with the indigenously developed 'Rudra' choppers being readied for Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) by this month end. According to sources, the Rudra, a Weapon System Integrated version of the indigenous Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters, is expected to obtain the IOC from the Bangalore-based Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) by this month end, providing a boost to the Indian defence industry. The Indian public sector plane manufacturer, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, is preparing the Rudra for the IOC and will be responsible for the certification. Read More...

India's Strategic Forces Successfully Test Agni-1 Missile

India's Strategic Forces have successfully tested the country's nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Agni-1 ballistic missile once again. In what is claimed as a user-trial, the forces fired the 700-km-range missile from the Wheeler Island off the Odisha coast on India's east into the Bay of Bengal, to test its effectiveness. The 12-metre-long missile can carry a one-tonne conventional or nuclear warhead. The single-stage, solid fuel-propelled missile lifted off from a road mobile launcher and hit the target, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officials, who facilitated the test, said.
