India Setting up CBRN Centre to Manage Disasters

India will soon set up a national centre for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear materials (CBRN) to manage disasters involving these substances and the necessary approved for the same has been accorded by the government. The centre will come under the aegis of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which has developed over 60 products and technologies under the CBRN sciences that are under production in Indian Ordnance Factories, Defence Public Sector Undertakings and in Private Sector, and are being inducted into the armed forces. Second Battalion of Arunachal Scouts, New Infrastructure Projects Approved

Giving Arunachal Pradesh its due as a strategically important border state, India has decided to not only set up the second battalion of the new Arunachal Scouts battalion, but also to expedite operationalisation of the planned advanced landing grounds and construction of border roads. Defence Minister AK Antony, who was in Itanagar to declare open the five-day festival to celebrate the silver jubilee of Arunachal Pradesh's statehood, announced that the centre has approved a number of proposals made by the state with regard to infrastructure development and creation of job opportunities. Negotiations Begin With France For MMRCA As Defence Minister Rules Out Eurofighter

The Defence Minister AK Antony has announced that the acquisition process has begun for the French fighter plane Rafale which has beat the Eurofighter in the MMRCA competition. The Minister added that India has started the cost negotiation with France thereby ruling out the possibility of reconsidering the Eurofighter Typhoon as suggested by Britain. IAF to Procure 71 More Mi-17 V5 Choppers for USD 800 Million

The IAF is planning to procure 71 more Mi-17 V5 choppers including 12 for the Ministry of Home Affairs for over USD 800 million for strengthening its helicopter fleet. These choppers would in addition to the 80 already ordered from Russia. Of the 80 choppers ordered earlier, Defence Minister A K Antony formally inducted their first batch on Friday. 59 of the 71 choppers would be provided to the IAF for replacing its old Mi-8 and Mi-17IV choppers and six would be given to the Border Security Force. Formal Induction of the Russian Mi-17 V5 into the IAF Today

The formal induction of the Russian-made medium-lift Mi-17V5 helicopters into the Indian Air Force (IAF) is scheduled for today. Till date, Russia has already delivered 21 of the 80 Mi-17s choppers ordered under the $1.34-billion deal in 2008. The induction ceremony will take place at the Palam airbase in the presence of Defence Minister A K Antony. The IAF has stated that the deployment of the first squadrons of the new Mi-17s choppers will be at Bhatinda and Srinagar.
