Committee on Security Clears Phase II of Project Seabird

Government has cleared a Rs 10,000 crore major expansion plan of the strategic Karwar naval base in Karnataka where the navy is planning to berth its Russian-origin Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier. In the last meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cleared the Phase II Alpha of the project Seabird in Karwar which will see a number of strategic and conventional submarines being deployed there, Navy sources said to defencenow.com. India to Buy 110 Microlite Planes For National Cadet Corps

India's National Cadets Corps (NCC), the country's official youth outfit for military training, is procuring 110 microlite aircraft to train its air wing cadets in flying techniques, apart from providing them with an adventure activity that will literally take them to the skies. These aircraft would be bought off-the-shelf. A Request for Proposal (RFP) for these planes was issued in May 2010 to global microlite manufacturers. Arjun, Dhruv Get Thumbs Up From Indian Army Chief

Giving his thumbs up to indigenous Arjun battle tanks and Dhruv advanced light helicopters, Indian Army chief General V.K. Singh described the two military machines as "good" though they had some problems that are being rectified. "It is a good tank in terms of mobility and such," Singh said here when asked to comment on the performance of Arjun that the Army has been operating in the deserts of Rajasthan for the last one year since a regiment was raised. Seventy per cent tanks out of 'night-blind' category: Gen V K Singh

Upgrading its capabilities to fight in dark, the Indian Army has modernised and removed night-blindness of at least 70 per cent of its tanks. "We have been able to do away with night-blindness of 70 per cent of our tanks and they can fight 24X7," Army Chief Gen V K Singh said on the sidelines of the Army day. He said the future fleet of the tanks is being provided the panoramic night sight and will be highly-agile in night operations also. The Army has managed to fit night vision devices including thermal imagers and infra-red equipment in 70 per cent of its tank armada to counter "night blindness”. Read More...
