PC-7 Basic Trainer Planes from Swiss Firm Pilatus

The Cabinet Committee on Security meeting today did not clear IAF proposal for buying 75 PC-7 basic trainer planes for training of IAF rookie pilots from Swiss firm Pilatus, though it was part of the agenda for the meeting. The approval for the basic trainer deal with Pilatus, selected through a long process ending last year, will be given in subsequent meetings of the CCS, sources said. The Pilatus deal is expected to be over $600 million for the 75 planes that are required by the IAF urgently, as 114 of its piston-engine HPT-32 basic trainers remain grounded since mid-2009. CCS Clears 950 Million Euro Deal for Missiles for Mirage 2000

The Cabinet Committee on Security today cleared a 950 million euro deal to procure 490 air-to-air missiles from a French firm for IAF's Mirage 2000 aircraft. The CCS meeting today cleared the deal to procure 490 MICA missiles manufactured by French firm MBDA for Euro 950 million, Defence Ministry said here. The missiles would be deployed on the 51 Mirage 2000 aircraft, which are already undergoing upgrades at French facilities under a Euro 1.47 billion deal signed earlier this year. Read More...

India’s Self-Propelled Artillery Project ‘Bhim’ To Get a New Lease of Life

After a hiatus of over a decade, the state-run Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) plans to restart the ‘Bhim’ self-propelled howitzer project once again. The ‘Bhim’ howitzer project went awry due to the ban on Denel of South Africa which was developing the artillery system as a private venture. After Denel was blacklisted by the Indian government due to its controversial role in a separate deal for anti-materiel rifles, the Bhim artillery system remained devoid of a gun. NH-90 Complains Against Sikorsky in MRH Deal

A new controversy has surrounded the Navy tender to procure 16 multirole helicopters with the Agusta Westland-led NH-90 helicopters complaining to the Defence Ministry about the capabilities of the rival firm Sikorsky-70B chopper. The complaint from NH-90 has come three months after the navy completed the field evaluation trials in the tender. NH-90 and Sikorsky are the only two contenders in the USD one billion contract for procuring 16 MRH. Read More...

Indian Army Demands Attack Helicopters to Form ‘Aerial Brigade’ For Battlefield Operations

The Indian Army has expressed the need for its own attack helicopters for aerial support to its tanks and troops in a battlefield scenario. The concept of an aerial brigade has been created for the Indian Army for seamless battlefield operations. The need for an aerial brigade for the Indian Army was conceived and finalized during the’ Exercise Sudarshan Shakti’ in the deserts of Rajasthan.
