Indian Navy to Complete the Nuclear Triad after Receiving Two Nuclear Submarines by Mid 2012

Indian Navy’s undersea warfare and nuclear strike capabilities will receive a major boost as India will be receiving two crucial submarines within a few months. INS Chakra, the first-generation Russian Nerpa Akula II class nuclear submarine, will be leased to India for ten years by the end of the current fiscal year while the indigenous submarine INS Arihant will be commissioned by mid 2012. Indian Navy to Grow into 150-Ship, 500-Aircraft Force by 2027

India's Navy will look like a "brand new" force by 2027 with a combatants level of 150-odd warships and another 500-odd aircraft fleet, even as it is also preparing to induct 49 new warships and submarines in the next few years that are on order with both Indian and foreign shipyards. This was revealed by Indian Navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma to coincide with the Navy Day celebrated on December 4. IAF's Israeli-Supplied Aerostat Damaged, Non-Operational

India's Parliament was Wednesday informed that one of Indian Air Force's (IAF) Aerostats supplied by Israeli defence firm Rafael has been damaged and that it is non-operational. Defence Minister AK Antony, in reply to questions from members of parliament in Rajya Sabha (House of States) the two Aerostat were bought by India from Rafael in 2002 and these two radars were supplied to IAF in 2007 and 2008 respectively. India Test-Fires Nuclear-Capable Agni-1 Missile Successfully

India has successfully test-fired its nuclear capable Agni-I strategic ballistic missile with a strike range of 700 kilometres from the test range at Wheeler Island off the coast of Orissa. The indigenously developed surface-to-surface, single-stage missile, powered by solid propellants, was test fired from a mobile launcher yesterday. The test-firing is part of the Indian Army’s user trials to gauge the Army's readiness to use it. The launch mission met all its objectives. New Assualt Rifles for Indian Army As Defence Ministry Awaits Global Tender Response

With the request for proposal (RFP) for import of 66,000 numbers of 5.56 mm assault rifle for an estimated $ 250 million sent out to foreign vendors last month, Defence Ministry has indicated that all the bids will be opened after submissions by mid-February next year. The 5.56 mm assault rifle will supplant the DRDO-made Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) assault rifle with the Indian Army for about two decades. As per the RFP, the Indian Army wants the rifles to be equipped with under barrel grenade launchers and capable of firing indigenously- produced ammunition. Read More...
