Tensions Along LoC Reduced: Antony

Tensions along the LoC have ‘reduced’ after talks between the two DGMOs but there will be no hasty decisions for normalising relations with Pakistan as it is ‘too early’ to do so, Defence Minister A K Antony has said. Talking to media persons, Defence Minister A K Antony said infiltration attempts are going on even in extreme winters and wondered that ‘if this is the case now, what will be the position (of infiltration) in summers’. "After the latest round of talks between the two DGMOs, the tension in the LoC has reduced but I cannot say or set a timeline for normalising the atmosphere there. Tata Offers Its Trucks for Tatra Replacement

Seeking a share in the pie for supply high-mobility vehicles to the Army, Tata Motors has offered its latest vehicles to the Defence Ministry to replace the controversial Tatra trucks, used so far to carry missiles such as Agni and Prithvi. The procurement of Tatra trucks has been put on hold pending a CBI probe into bribery allegations by former Army chief Gen V K Singh. Tata Motors will make a presentation before Defence Ministry’s Director General (Acquisition) S B Agnihotri about its latest vehicles offered by it to replace Tatra trucks for carrying missile systems of the armed forces such as BrahMos and Pinaka, Defence Ministry sources said here. Aero India 2013 to Be a Low-Key Affair

Absence of foreign fighter aircraft and reduced number of participating companies are likely to make the ninth edition of the biennial Aero India show a low-key affair. Addressing a press conference on the Aero India show, Secretary (Defence Production) R K Mathur claimed the ninth edition of the show in Banglaore was expected to be "bigger and better" than the previous ones. However, ministry officials said the number of aircraft who have confirmed participation in the show is 52 this year so far while 63 aircraft had come in 2011. The number of companies who have booked space at the show is 607 while 675 took part in the last edition. Offsets Help Local Private Defence Industry to Bag Contracts worth Rs 14,000 Crore

The offsets policies of the Defence Ministry have helped the local private military and aviation industry to get contracts worth over Rs 14,000 crore in the last few years. The local Industry has bagged contract worth over Rs 14,000 crore due to the offsets policy under the Defence Procurement Procedure, Secretary (Defence Production) R K Mathur told reporters here. As per the offsets policy, foreign vendors bagging any deal worth over Rs 300 crore have to invest at least 30 per cent of the worth of the deal in the Indian industry only. Read More...

India-US Ink USD 600 Million Deal For Fighter Engines

India and the US have finalised a USD 600 million deal for supplying 99 jet engines to be used in the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft 'Tejas' being developed by the DRDO. Around two years ago, India had selected the American company General Electric over its rival European Eurojet 2000 for the LCA Mark II programme expected to be ready around 2014-15. "The deal worth over USD 600 million has been finalised with the US for procuring 99 engines for the LCA Tejas MkII," DRDO officials said. As per the contract, the order could be for 99 engines initially but India will have the option of ordering another 100 engines in the future. Read More...
