IAF Orders Probe Into Naxal Attack Incident

A probe has been set up by the IAF Friday's incident in which its helicopter came under attack by suspected Naxalites in the interiors of Chhattisgarh's Sukma district. One CRPF personnel was injured and the helicopter was damaged in the firing. A team of technicians has been sent by the IAF to the spot to get back the Mi-17 chopper, which suffered 15 hits in the firing and suffered "extensive damage" in its hydraulic oil and fuel tank, an IAF spokesperson said. The chopper was attacked after it took off from Jagdalpur to rescue two CRPF personnel and was forced to land in general area of Chintal Gufa and Temalwada in Dantewada district. Read More...

Defence Ministry Protests Rs 10,000 Crore Budget Cut

The Indian Defence Ministry has opposed a decision of the Finance Ministry to reduce its budget by Rs 10,000 crore saying this move will adversely impact its plans for procuring critical equipment for the three Services. The Defence Ministry has asked the Finance Ministry to take back its decision to cut Rs 10,000 crore from its allocated budget of around Rs 1.93 lakh crore citing the impact it can have on the modernisation plans of the Armed Forces including the raising of the new Mountain Strike Corps and procurement of 126 M-MRCA, sources said here. CCS Approves 3-Fold Hike in Armed Forces Financial Powers

India has hiked the financial powers of its army, navy and air force headquarters three-fold to facilitate speedy purchases of essential defence equipment, weapons and systems. The revised financial powers, under which the three services headquarters can procure up to $30 million on their own, got the nod of the highest decision-making body, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). Indian Coast Guard Gets First 3-Star officer

Indian Coast Guard has got its first-ever three-star officer from within its own cadre since it was raised in 1977. The Indian government approved the elevation of the present second-in-command of the Indian Coast Guard, Inspector General Rajendra Singh, as Additional Director General, according to officers from the youngest of the four Indian armed forces. "Indian Coast Guard got its first own three-star officer as the Defence Ministry approved the elevation of its Second-in-Command IG Rajendra Singh as Additional Director General," they said. Navy test fires BrahMos in Bay of Bengal

Boosting its firepower, India on Wednesday successfully test-fired a highly manoeuvrable version of the 290-km range supersonic cruise missile BrahMos from a naval warship off the coast of Vishakhapatnam in Bay of Bengal. "At 9.30 am, the missile blasted off from the INS Ranvijay in a pre-designated war scenario taking a 'double-manoeuvre in S-form' hitting the designated target ship just one meter above water line. The sheer velocity and power of hit made the missile rip through the ship's hull," BrahMos Aerospace CEO A Sivathanu Pillai said on Wednesday. Read More...
