Armed Forces Begin Hunt For Tatra Replacement

With the Government freezing the acquisition of Tatra trucks, the defence forces have started looking for alternative vehicles to equip them with their missile systems. In view of Defence Ministry's decision to put on hold the procurement of Tatra trucks pending the CBI probe into allegations of bribery by former Army Chief Gen VK Singh, several key missile projects of the Army and the Air Force have been held up. The armed forces are looking at trucks being offered by manufacturers from Russia and Belarus including the Volat trucks being offered by a Belarusian firm, defence sources said. Read More...

India, Russia Deal for Air-Launched BrahMos

India and Russia have signed a deal for working together to develop the air-launched version of the 290-km-range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, which would be fitted to the Su-30MKI combat aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF). An agreement was signed between BrahMos Aerospace, Russian Rosoboronexport and Sukhoi Design Bureau for developing the air-launched version of the missile here last week, Defence Ministry officials said here. The two sides have been holding negotiations for the joint development for quite some time now and are now hopeful that the first test of the missile would be done within next six months, they said. India Opens New Coast Guard Station In Andaman

India has opened a new Coast Guard station at Mayabunder in north Andaman in a bid to strengthen the coastal security of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. India's Defence Secretary Shashikant Sharma commissioned the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) station. Andaman and Nicobar Command commander-in-chief Air Marshal PK Roy and Commander Coast Guard Region (Andaman and Nicobar) Inspector General VSR Murthy were present on the occasion. India, Russia Ink Key Defence Pacts

India and Russia have inked defence contracts worth $2.9 billion during the summit meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Vladimir Putin. The two key deals signed were the $1.6-billion worth 42 Su-30MKI combat aircraft that India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will produce at its facility under licence from Russia Rosoboronexport and Sukhoi Corporation and the $1.3-billion worth 71 Mi-17V5 medium lift helicopters, of which 59 will go to the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the rest 12 to India's paramilitary forces involved in internal security duties. INS Chakra components malfunctioning

India's only Russian-origin nuclear submarine INS Chakra is facing problems with its critical components which are malfunctioning and affecting its operational readiness. The 8,000-tonne submarine has been facing problems with its critical components and Russia has been asked to provide the parts for the vessel which need to be replaced, Navy sources said here. However, they did not divulge the components which would have to be replaced but indicated they are critical for the operations of the submarine. India had inducted the Akula-II Class 'Nerpa' nuclear submarine in its inventory in April, 2012 at the Vishakhapatnam-based Eastern Naval Command. It was renamed 'Chakra' by the Indian Navy.
