Nepal Army Chief To Be Conferred Honorary Indian Army General Rank
Nepal Army chief General Gaurav Shamsher Rana will be conferred the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army by President Pranab Mukherjee when he will be in India on an eight-day official visit beginning January 7. It is a custom between the two armies to confer this honour on each other's chief since 1965 to signify their close military-to-military ties. The rank conferring investiture ceremony will be held on January 8 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Presidential Place on Raisina Hills here, Indian Army officers said here. Indian Army chief General Bikram Singh was conferred the rank if General of the Nepal Army when he had visited the Himalayan nation in July this year.
Goa Shipyard Hands Over INS Saryu to Indian Navy
Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has handed over to the Indian Navy the newly built INS Saryu, the largest offshore patrol vessel of the force. The indigenously-designed 105-metre vessel was handed over by GSL Chairman Rear Admiral (Retired) Vineet Bakhshi to Commander Amanpreet Singh, the Commanding Officer-designate of INS Saryu, in Goa, according to the shipyard officials. The offshore patrol vessel will help meet the Indian Navy's ever increasing requirement for undertaking ocean surveillance and surface warfare operations in order to prevent infiltration and transgression of maritime sovereignty, they said.
India, Russia to Sign Key Defence Deals worth $4 Billion
India and Russia are preparing to sign three key defence deals worth $4 billion when Russian President Vladimir Putin comes to New Delhi for a summit meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on December 24. Among the deals planned for inking including the final contract for licenced production of 42 Su-30MKI planes by Indian government-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, purchase of 71 Mi-17V5 medium lift helicopters and 970 AL-31 aero-engines for the Sukhoi combat aircraft. The likely deals were discussed and finalised at the Indian Cabinet Committee on Security headed by Manmohan Singh with participation from Defence Minister AK Antony.
Indian Coast Guard Inducts New Interceptor Boat
Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has inducted the first of 36 high speed interceptor boats to boost the coastal security force's capability to prevent terror attacks like the one on Mumbai in 2008 and illegal activities close to the 7,516-km coast. The $200-million order for the 36 interceptor boats had been placed by the Indian government post-26/11 terror strikes as part of the new coastal security measures. Designed and built in-house by Indian private sector Larsen and Toubro at its Surat unit, the interceptor boat was commissioned at Porbander in Gujarat by Gandhinagar-based South Western Air Command chief Air Marshal A K Gogoi.
India Tests Prithvi-II N-Capable Missile
India has successfully tested its Prithvi-2 indigenous nuclear-capable ballistic missile from a test range off Odisha coast in the Bay of Bengal, in what is termed as an user-trial by the nation's strategic forces that handle nuclear weapons. The 350-km-range surface-to-surface missile blasted off from a mobile launcher at the launch complex of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) of Chandipur-on-sea in Balasore district, around 230 km from Bhubaneshwar, Odisha's capital. "The mission was successful," ITR director MVKV Prasad was quoted as saying soon after the test.
