India's Defence Minister A. K. Antony visited neighbouring Myanmar for two days this week when he met that country's President Thein Sein at capital Nay Pyi Taw. During the meeting, Antony conveyed the importance placed by India on enhancement of bilateral ties in all fields, including defence, with Myanmar, according to Indian defence officials.
Antony noted that the recent exchanges of visits between both countries at political and other levels had imparted a new momentum to the bilateral relationship. In the case of defence in particular, he noted that the two sides were working to consolidate ties, in mutual interest of both.

Tensions along the LoC have ‘reduced’ after talks between the two DGMOs but there will be no hasty decisions for normalising relations with Pakistan as it is ‘too early’ to do so, Defence Minister A K Antony has said. Talking to media persons, Defence Minister A K Antony said infiltration attempts are going on even in extreme winters and wondered that ‘if this is the case now, what will be the position (of infiltration) in summers’. "After the latest round of talks between the two DGMOs, the tension in the LoC has reduced but I cannot say or set a timeline for normalising the atmosphere there. It depends on so many factors,” he said.

Defence Minister AK Antony has asked the military top brass to beat the expected schedules for completion of critical road projects in the northeastern states, particularly Arunachal Pradesh bordering China, "in view of the current security scenario". Reviewing the development of new infrastructure including airfields along the China border in the North East, Antony said: "We need to go beyond the PDCs (proposed date of completion) in view of the current security scenario," Defence Ministry officials said here. Antony held a meeting to review infrastructure development on the North East border attended by Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne.

Even as his Ministry is preparing itself for curtailment of funds, Defence Minister A K Antony today said there will be no cut in budget for procuring equipment essential for operational preparedness of armed forces. "Everything depends on the entire financial situation of the government...for ammunition and platforms essential for operational preparedness of the armed forces, there would not be any cut," he told reporters on the sidelines of an IDSA function here. The Minister was asked if there would be delays in the procurement of weapon systems for armed forces due to economic slowdown and austerity measures.

Amid apprehensions over a possible budget cut, the Defence Minister A K Antony will today review major military modernisation projects of the Armed Forces such as plans for acquiring 126 combat aircraft and raising a Strike Corps in the northeastern sector. In a meeting with the three Services vice chiefs, Defence Minister AK Antony will review the expenditure made by the Armed Forces this year and their plans for the remaining part of the fiscal, Ministry officials said. The meeting comes at a time when there is a possibility of a budget cut in view of the economic slowdown. The Defence Ministry has been allocated Rs 1.93 lakh crore.
