IAF to Upgrade Strength along Pakistan Border
Indian Air Force will deploy medium power radars and advanced helicopters in the western sector in order to strengthen its preparedness along the Indo-Pak border in Rajasthan. While Jodhpur airbase will soon have a squadron of transport helicopters Mi-17 V5, medium power radars would also be deployed at Jaisalmer airbase, Air Marshal Anjan Kumar Gogoi, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South-Western Air command, said at a press conference here. Gogoi said that the new squadron at Phalodi will be ready by October this year. Admitting that the SW air command has shortage of transport aircraft, he said that it will also be looked into. The Air Marshal also informed that Deesa airbase in north Gujarat will soon become a training-cum-operational base.

Navy Chief Assures Sea Trials of Homegrown Nuclear Submarine INS Arihant Soon
The Indian Navy is poised to complete the country’s nuclear triad as the homegrown nuclear submarine INS Arihant is expected to be launched for sea trials soon. According to Indian Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma, INS Arihant is steadily progressing towards its operationalisation and sea trials are expected in the coming months. Speaking at his farewell press conference, Indian Navy Chief Nirmal Verma stated that a credible retaliatory strike capability is a must considering India has a no-first-use commitment. INS Arihant is part of a project which will entail the construction of five such vessels equipped with nuclear-tipped missiles and torpedoes.

Defence Minister Antony Sets 2 Month Deadline for Coastal Radars, Reviews Delivery of Interceptor Craft and Systems
During a high-level meeting consisting of the Chiefs of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, Defence minister AK Antony has set a deadline of two months to get security radars along India’s 7,500-km coastline in place. While taking stock of the security apparatus, the Defence Minister Antony also reviewed the timely delivery of 80 Fast Interceptor Craft ordered from a Sri Lankan firm and implementation of a communication network for the eastern coastline. As per the Defence Ministry release, Defence Minister Antony has directed that the first phase of the coastal radar network on both the west and east coast should be completed in the next two months.

DRDO Surges Ahead With 2nd Phase of AEW&CS, Plans to Integrate AESA Radar on Tejas Mark 2 as Well
The state-run Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) have received sanctions to pursue the second phase of AEW&CS (Airborne Early Warning and Control System) programme. In a recent report, DRDO Chief Dr.VK Saraswat has stated that the project will be called AEW&CS India and the requisite sanctions have been granted for the same. Besides, the homegrown AESA radar will also be integrated into the Tejas Mark II LCA.

Parliamentary Committee to Review Performance of Defence Agencies in Bangalore
Following its six day assessment tour in April, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence is once again visiting Bangalore and Mysore to review the working of the Defence installations in the city. The main intention is to assess the level of indigenization and self-reliance that the state-run Defence agencies in the city and ascertain their performance levels. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence is expected to review the performance of state-run agencies such as Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).
