INS Vikramaditya's Brick Work Complete, Ready for Final Trials
After four months of work on INS Vikramditya, which reported a boiler malfunction, Russia has completed the brick-lining work and is getting ready to take the Indian Navy warship out for sea trials in the Barents by June this year. The Russian-built warship, the erstwhile Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier, will be ready to join the Indian Navy fleet as per the revised schedule of last quarter of 2013, senior Indian Navy officers said here. Incidentally, The Indian Navy's this year tableau during the Republic Day parade will be a replica of the 44,500-tonne Vikramaditya.

CCS Clears Rs 13,000 Cr Karwar Naval Base Expansion
The government on Thursday cleared proposals worth over Rs 13,000 crore for a major expansion of the strategic Naval air base at Karwar where the Russian-origin aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov will be berthed and raising a new battalion of Sikkim Scouts for the Army. The proposals were cleared at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here, Navy sources said. Under the plan, Navy will carry out the expansion of the Karwar base on the country's western sea board in Karnataka where it will berth Admiral Gorshkov, now rechristened INS Vikramaditya.

India to Take Up Gorshkov with Prez Putin
Long delays in the handing over of aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov will be taken up in a "big way" during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit next month while India is seriously considering imposing a penalty of around Rs 600 crore over the issue. Putin was supposed to visit on Friday but has postponed his visit to December 24. Russia had informed India at the Defence Minister-level talks earlier this month that it would be able to deliver the much-delayed warship only by the end of next year due to malfunctions in its boilers. "The issue would be taken up in a big way during President Putin's visit and we are also considering the option of imposing liquidity damages up to five per cent.

Now, Gorshkov to Arrive Next Year-End
It’s official now. Aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov will be handed over towards the end of next year; Russia said today as India conveyed its "serious concern" over the prolonged delay and asked it to adopt a "wartime approach" for ensuring its early delivery. The issue came up at a meeting here between Defence Minister A K Antony and his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov during which Moscow said the 45,000-tonne aircraft carrier had suffered a "big malfunction" in its engine and could be handed over only in "fourth quarter of 2013".

India May Impose $120 Million Penalty on Russia for Gorshkov Delay
India may impose a $120-million penalty on a Russian shipyard if the delivery of the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier to the Indian Navy is delayed beyond the schedule in December 2012. This was stated by an Indian defence ministry official, who noted that the penalty will be five per cent of the $2.34 billion that India is paying to Russian shipyard Sevmash for the warship that has been rechristened INS Vikramaditya. It was scheduled for commissioning into Indian Navy on December 4 this year, but Russian media reports have suggested that the warship may join the Indian Navy only by October 2013.
