The second developmental trial of the Indian homegrown nuclear missile Agni-IV has been planned for today after its postponement yesterday. The trial was unable to be performed yesterday following heavy rains and certain technical snags in the system. Apparently, India was to test-fire the Agni-IV missile a day after Pakistan successfully test-fired its ‘Babur’ missile earlier this week. The test on Agni-IV nuclear capable missile was cancelled since the missile system developed technical shortcomings during last minute checkup after the range synchronization, according to media reports. The test of the Agni-IV is planned for today if the faults are rectified and all the arrangements at the test facility in Odisha are ready.

Originally planned for a launch by end of February this year, India will now try and test its 5,000-km range Agni-5 in March this year, to enter a league of select nations with missiles that can hit targets at that distance, many a times much beyond within their continent. This was conveyed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chief Dr. V.K. Saraswat at Bangalore on the sidelines of a function to mark the silver jubilee of Defence Avionics and Research Establishment, a DRDO lab. "Right now, we are doing integration of Agni-5," Saraswat, also the scientific advisor to the Indian defence minister, said.

India has successfully test-fired its nuclear capable Agni-I strategic ballistic missile with a strike range of 700 kilometres from the test range at Wheeler Island off the coast of Orissa. The indigenously developed surface-to-surface, single-stage missile, powered by solid propellants, was test fired from a mobile launcher yesterday. The test-firing is part of the Indian Army’s user trials to gauge the Army's readiness to use it. The launch mission met all its objectives. The Agni-1 strategic ballistic missile was test fired by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Indian Army with logistic support from the state-run DRDO.

India will hold a series of missile tests including its 5,000-km range Agni-5, naval 70-km long-range surface-to-air (LR-SAM), and Nirbhay sub-sonic cruise missile in early 2012, top Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officials said Wednesday. Agni-5, which has a range just 500-km less than an Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), will be tested between December-end this year and February next year, DRDO Director General Dr. V.K. Saraswat said here.
