India's Defence Shipyards Building 61 Warships, Vessels

India's four Defence public sector shipyards are building a total of 61 warships and vessels for the maritime forces of the country. The four shipyards are Mumbai-based Mazagaon Docks Limited (MDL), Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Goa-based Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and Visakhapatnam-based Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), which is the latest entrant in governmental warship building in the country. Indian Navy to Receive INS Teg in April-End As It Completes Sea-Trials in Russia

After the successful completion of the sea acceptance trials in Russia, India is all set to receive the INS Teg being built at Yantar Shipyard in Russia. INS Teg will be the first of the three new Talwar class guided missile frigates being built by Russia for Indian Navy. Indo-Us Naval Drill ‘Malabar -2012’ Starts Off In Bay of Bengal

The annual Indo-US joint naval drill called ‘Exercise Malabar-2012’ has commenced in the Bay of Bengal at Chennai coast this week. Exercise Malabar 2012 will be a 10-day long exercise wherein both countries will carry out drills with the help of their frontline units. The main thrust of the exercise will be to showcase air defence and anti-submarine warfare capabilities besides other operations. The harbour phase of the exercise has already started out in Chennai. Sikorsky Offers M-70 B Sea Hawk Chopper to the Navy, Plans Production Hub in Hyderabad

The US aerospace major Sikorsky has offered to make the naval variant of the Black Hawk helicopter in India once the Indian Navy decides to buy it for its fleet. The M-70B Sea Hawk will be the naval variant which, according to Boeing, can be co-produced in India with significant transfer of technology and manufacturing capability. Currently, the Indian Navy already has a tender for 16 helicopters with an option of eight more twin-engine, 12.5 tonne category helicopters. Read More...

Antony to Witness Indian Navy Exercise from INS Viraat

India's Defence Minister AK Antony will be in Visakhapatnam Tuesday and Wednesday to witness a major naval exercise that the Indian Navy is conducting in the Bay of Bengal to train for the defence of the Eastern seaboard from threats from both conventional and sub-conventional threats. He will be watching the warships carry out their manoeuvres from atop the nation's lone aircraft carrier INS Viraat that has done over 50 years of naval service in both the British and the Indian navies, according to defence ministry spokesperson here.
