Defence Ministry Protests Rs 10,000 Crore Budget Cut

The Indian Defence Ministry has opposed a decision of the Finance Ministry to reduce its budget by Rs 10,000 crore saying this move will adversely impact its plans for procuring critical equipment for the three Services. The Defence Ministry has asked the Finance Ministry to take back its decision to cut Rs 10,000 crore from its allocated budget of around Rs 1.93 lakh crore citing the impact it can have on the modernisation plans of the Armed Forces including the raising of the new Mountain Strike Corps and procurement of 126 M-MRCA, sources said here. CCS Approves 3-Fold Hike in Armed Forces Financial Powers

India has hiked the financial powers of its army, navy and air force headquarters three-fold to facilitate speedy purchases of essential defence equipment, weapons and systems. The revised financial powers, under which the three services headquarters can procure up to $30 million on their own, got the nod of the highest decision-making body, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). India's DRDO Told To Speed up Projects

India's defence research agency, the DRDO, has been told to speed up its weapons and systems development programmes to ensure self-reliance in fulfilling the armed forces' needs from indigenous sources. The direction from Defence Minister AK Antony comes a week after the Comptroller and Auditor General, India's official auditors, slammed the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for deficiencies in its projects and procedural lapses in obtaining sanction for its new projects. Singapore Defence Minister Dismisses Firm Blacklisting

Dismissing the blacklisting of a firm from his country by India as a hurdle in military ties, Singaporean Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen has said that the armed forces of the two countries were moving closer to each other more than ever. He also called for a greater role for India in the Asia-Pacific and South East Asian security arrangement and architecture in the present and the future. "Actually, no, it has not affected ties," Ng Eng Hen said when asked if the blacklisting of the Singapore Technology Kinetics by India after its name figured in the bribery case involving a former Ordnance Factory Board chief had affected defence ties between the two nations. Defence Ministry Struggles to Get Budget Allocation

Defence Ministry is struggling to get even its allocated budget of Rs 1.93 lakh crore allotted by the government in the budget and is not hopeful of getting the additional Rs 40000 crore demanded by it for modernisation. "Now I am struggling to get the budgetary amount," he told reporters here when asked if he was hopeful of getting the additional Rs 40,000 crore sought by his ministry for modernising the three services.
