At a high-level meeting in New Delhi, Defence Minister A.K Antony has taken stock of the coastal security system in the country and emphasized a timely completion of projects related to the same. Defence Minister has also directed for completion of the installation of radars in the mainland by November 26, 2012 and in the island territories by March 2013. The high-level meeting comprised of the Defence Minister AK Antony, National Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon, Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth, Navy Chief Admiral D K Joshi, Defence Secretary Shashikant Sharma and representatives of state governments.

Toughening their stand, the three Services Chiefs have raised the banner of opposition against the composition of a committee set up to address pay-related issues and demanded the inclusion of their representative in it, saying it only comprises IAS officers. They have written letters to Defence Minister a K Antony in this regard and Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma also met him personally today to stress on the need for having a Services' representative in the panel, Navy spokesperson said here. The high-level committee headed by Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth is looking into the main demands of the Services such as elevation of all Lt Gen-rank officers to a higher pay grade. The Navy Chief, who is the seniormost of the three Service Chiefs, has been at the forefront of raising the demands of the Services and has made several representations to the government in this regard.

A national security task force, headed by former cabinet secretary Naresh Chandra, has submitted its final report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Among the recommendations it has made, the task force, which had 13 others from Defence, intelligence, diplomacy and strategic affairs sectors, wants a major revamp of the structures and operating procedures of security and intelligence agencies. The task force, set up in July 2011, was mandated to review existing processes, procedures and practices in the national security system.
