Indian Army to Deploy Armed Helos with Rudra Ready for Induction

The Indian Army is preparing to induct and deploy armed helicopters in its key formations facing Pakistan and China, with the indigenously developed 'Rudra' choppers being readied for Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) by this month end. According to sources, the Rudra, a Weapon System Integrated version of the indigenous Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters, is expected to obtain the IOC from the Bangalore-based Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) by this month end, providing a boost to the Indian defence industry. Decision on Acquiring 197 Light Utility Helicopters for the Armed Forces by Next Month

India’s prestigious helicopter acquisition plans may finally get clearer by the end of the month as the Defence Ministry scrutinizes the report submitted by a special technical committee regarding the acquisition process. The deal to procure 197 light utility helicopters for the Army and Air Force was stalled due to complaints of tender deviations. The Technical Oversight Committee has now submitted a report to the Defence ministry and the decision to either scrap or go ahead with the deal will be finalized after studying the report. No Finance Ministry Objection To Helicopter Trials

The Indian government has informed parliament that its finance ministry has not raised objections regarding the trial process for selection of 197 reconnaissance and surveillance helicopters for the country's armed forces. India is in the tendering process to buy 197 of these helicopters, apart from 187 light utility helicopters to be designed and developed by the public sector Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for both the army and the air force. Indian Army to Procure GPS Navigational Aid for Its Choppers

In order to avoid future mishaps in various army operations, India has decided to procure modern navigational equipment for its choppers. Exercising exclusive rights and financial powers, the Northern Army Commander has issued a tender to procure 80 GPS advanced navigation systems for the Cheetah and Chetak helicopters. The need for advanced navigational systems on helicopters has become imperative to avoid the repetition of stray incidents that have occurred in the past by the Indian Army’s chopper pilots. Eurocopter Writes To Army Chief for Delays in 197 Chopper Deal

Expressing "concern" over delays in finalising the deal for procuring 197 light helicopters for the defence forces, European defence major Eurocopter has written a letter to Army chief Gen V K Singh in that regard. The European Eurocopter AS 350 Fennec is competing with Russian Kamov 226 'Sergei' for supplying these choppers to the Indian Army and Air Force in a project expected to be worth over $1.5 billion. The choppers will be used by the Army and the IAF to replace their aging fleet of vintage Cheetah and Chetak helicopters. Read More...
