Goa Shipyard Hands Over INS Saryu to Indian Navy

Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has handed over to the Indian Navy the newly built INS Saryu, the largest offshore patrol vessel of the force. The indigenously-designed 105-metre vessel was handed over by GSL Chairman Rear Admiral (Retired) Vineet Bakhshi to Commander Amanpreet Singh, the Commanding Officer-designate of INS Saryu, in Goa, according to the shipyard officials. The offshore patrol vessel will help meet the Indian Navy's ever increasing requirement for undertaking ocean surveillance and surface warfare operations in order to prevent infiltration and transgression of maritime sovereignty, they said. Indian Coast Guard Inducts New Interceptor Boat

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has inducted the first of 36 high speed interceptor boats to boost the coastal security force's capability to prevent terror attacks like the one on Mumbai in 2008 and illegal activities close to the 7,516-km coast. The $200-million order for the 36 interceptor boats had been placed by the Indian government post-26/11 terror strikes as part of the new coastal security measures. Designed and built in-house by Indian private sector Larsen and Toubro at its Surat unit, the interceptor boat was commissioned at Porbander in Gujarat by Gandhinagar-based South Western Air Command chief Air Marshal A K Gogoi. CCS Clears Rs 2,150 Cr Coastal Security Proposal

A proposal to the tune of Rs 2,150 crore for enhancing coastal security to prevent 26/11 type attacks has been cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). The CCS meeting, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, cleared proposals worth Rs. 2,150 crore under which five offshore patrol vessel would be brought for the Coast Guard for Rs. 1,500 crore, defence sources said here. As part of the proposals, Rs. 640 crore would be spent on setting up the second phase of coastal security network under which 38 radars would be established to create a "near-gaffe free electronic surveillance along the entire coastal area". Kolkata Gets Coast Guard Regional Headquarters

India has opened its fifth Coast Guard regional headquarters in Kolkata that will keep a watchful eyes on coastal security of the nation's northeastern region. West Bengal Governor and former Intelligence Bureau chief MK Narayanan formally declared the Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (North East) and the co-located Coast Guard Station open and commissioned it. Indian Coast Guard Director General Vice Admiral MP Muralidharan and a large number of civilian and military dignitaries were present on the occasion. Defence Minister Reviews Coastal Security, Sets Deadline for Radar Installation

At a high-level meeting in New Delhi, Defence Minister A.K Antony has taken stock of the coastal security system in the country and emphasized a timely completion of projects related to the same. Defence Minister has also directed for completion of the installation of radars in the mainland by November 26, 2012 and in the island territories by March 2013. The high-level meeting comprised of the Defence Minister AK Antony, National Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon, Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth, Navy Chief Admiral D K Joshi, Defence Secretary Shashikant Sharma and representatives of state governments.
