A K Antony Will Today Review Major Military Modernisation Projects

Amid apprehensions over a possible budget cut, the Defence Minister A K Antony will today review major military modernisation projects of the Armed Forces such as plans for acquiring 126 combat aircraft and raising a Strike Corps in the northeastern sector. In a meeting with the three Services vice chiefs, Defence Minister AK Antony will review the expenditure made by the Armed Forces this year and their plans for the remaining part of the fiscal, Ministry officials said. Despite Gorshkov Delay, India to Acquire Russian Su-30mki and Medium-Lift Choppers

While the visiting Russian Defence Minister has confirmed yet another blow to the Indian Navy by declaring one year delay in Gorshkov carrier delivery, other major military deals are being materialized in New Delhi. India is gearing for the procurement of 42 Su-30 MKI combat aircraft and 71 medium-lift helicopters from Russia. Indian Defence Mister AK Antony and his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov have discussed the issue of the procurement of Su-30 MKI and medium-lift choppers in their meeting earlier. MiG 27s to be phased out by 2017: IAF

Worried over problems in engines of its MiG-27 combat aircraft, Indian Air Force is planning to phase out these Russian-origin planes by 2017. IAF operates about 80 (four squadrons) of these aircraft in its fleet and due to the recurring problems in their engines, it had to ground all of them after a crash about two years ago. "We are planning to phase out the MiG-27s, of which around 80 are still in service, by the year 2017," senior IAF officials said. IAF has deployed two squadrons each of the aircraft in Jodhpur in Rajasthan and Kalaikunda in West Bengal at present. Read More...

After A Spate of Crashes, IAF Plans to Acquire Two Second-Hand Mirage 2000

With the Indian Air Force (IAF) losing two Mirage 2000 combat aircraft earlier this year in crashes, India is planning to acquire two second hand Mirage 2000 aircraft. The two Mirage 2000 aircraft of IAF had crashed earlier this year in February and March reducing the fleet of Mirage 2000 to 49 aircraft. IAF operates three squadrons of Mirages and all of them are deployed at the Maharajpur air base. According to IAF officials, the procurement of the two Mirage 2000 will happen with France or some other Air Force which still operates these aircraft in its inventory. MMRCA Deal By March 2013; Attack Choppers Under Negotiation; Heavy lift Helos, Refuellers Bids Opening Soon

India will finalise its originally-estimated $10.5-billion contract for 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) with the selected Dassault Aviation for its Rafale fighter jets within this fiscal that ends in March 2013. It is also readying to open the commercial bids in the tenders for 15 heavy lift helicopters and six mid-air refuellers, apart getting all set to sign a $1.4-billion deal for 22 Apache attack helicopters from the American aerospace major Boeing's stable. These apart negotiations are also on to buy four more Aerostat radars from Israel at a likely cost of over $400 million. Read More...
