Defence Minister Admits Flaw in Recent Brahmos Test, Delay in Tejas LCA Clearance

Indian Defence PSUs have yet again dampened the spirit of the Indian Armed Forces since the Defence Ministry has indicated that the last test of the Indo-Russian BrahMos missile was not fully successful. Added to this, it has also been revealed that the indigenous Tejas LCA is facing more delays and will not get initial operational clearance (IOC) before 2013. Indian Defence Minister AK Antony has stated in the Parliament that one subsystem failed in the July 29 test of the Indo-Russian BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. Defence Ministry Facing Shortage of Funds, To Review Acquisition Projects

With a slow pace economy derailing Government's growth targets, the Defence Ministry will undertake a review next month of major military projects such as plans for acquiring 126 combat aircraft and raising a Strike Corps in the northeastern sector. The review will be carried out after an assessment is made on the performance of the economy at the end of the second quarter of this fiscal, Government sources said. The Defence Ministry has been allocated Rs. 1.93 lakh crore for the current fiscal but it had made a demand for additional funds of more than Rs. 40,000 crore for meeting its capital requirements. Govt All Set To Procure Rafale

Amid speculations by Germany and Russia over the procurement of Rafale, Government is going ahead with the procurement of 126 French combat aircraft and effort is being made to complete the deal within this financial year. Contract negotiations for the multi-billion dollar deal will resume soon, sources said here. Questions had been raised over the process by an MP besides some other quarters but a committee of independent monitors has given a clean chit to the process, they said. Government is making efforts to conclude the deal during this financial year, sources said. The examination of the process was ordered by Defence Minister A K Antony after former MP Mysura Reddy questioned the method of selecting Rafale as the lowest bidder for the deal. Read More...

IAF to Upgrade Strength along Pakistan Border

Indian Air Force will deploy medium power radars and advanced helicopters in the western sector in order to strengthen its preparedness along the Indo-Pak border in Rajasthan. While Jodhpur airbase will soon have a squadron of transport helicopters Mi-17 V5, medium power radars would also be deployed at Jaisalmer airbase, Air Marshal Anjan Kumar Gogoi, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South-Western Air command, said at a press conference here. Gogoi said that the new squadron at Phalodi will be ready by October this year. Admitting that the SW air command has shortage of transport aircraft, he said that it will also be looked into. The Air Marshal also informed that Deesa airbase in north Gujarat will soon become a training-cum-operational base. Read More...

Germany and Russia Hopeful That the $10.4 Billion MMRCA Tender Will Get Re-Floated

While India’s decision to go for the French Rafale fighter in the $ 10.4 MMRCA has been announced earlier this year, it seems that the Germany as well as Russia are still hopeful that the deal may come their way. According to media reports, high-ranking German officials as well as Russian officials feel that the MMRCA deal can still swing in to their side. As per the latest reports, Deputy Chief of the ruling CDU-led coalition's parliamentary committee in Bundestag (lower house of Parliament) for foreign and defence affairs, Andreas Schockenhoff, has indicated that the last word had not yet been heard on the MMRCA deal.
