DRDO Fails to Deliver Key Projects like LCA and AEW&C on Time, Criticized for Cost Overruns Again
The state-run DRDO has once again fallen into the line of fire as it lags behind schedule for key Defence projects for the Indian Armed Forces. Besides, none of the recommendations to revamp the DRDO’s operations or its restructuring plan have been implemented. Defence Minister AK Antony has stated in the Parliament that DRDO projects including Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEWC) and Kaveri engine have not been executed as per the schedule resulting in a hike in their cost of development. Admitting to the delays, Defence Minister Antony has replied in the Parliament that probable dates of completion (PDC) for LCA Phase II, Naval LCA, AEW&C and the Kaveri engine have been extended and costs have been enhanced.
India, US Deal for LCA Engines Soon
For enhancing the capabilities of the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) India and the US are close to signing a deal worth over $600 million for supplying 99 jet engines manufactured by American giant General electric (GE) corporation. Around two years ago, India had selected the American company General Electric over its rival European Eurojet 2000 for the LCA Mark II programme expected to be ready around 2014-15. Negotiations with the US firm over various issues involved in the deal, including price and transfer of technology.

Six LCA Tejas Squadrons for IAF by 2022
Indian Air Force (IAF) will get six squadrons of India's indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas by 2022. "It is planned to induct six LCA squadrons by the end of 13th Plan (2017-2022)," the parliament has been informed. However, the government admitted that there has been a delay in the manufacturing of the LCA. Tejas is a design and development project and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) is the nodal organization for the development of the LCA. The government said Tejas achieved the Initial Operational Clearance-1 on January 10, 2011. "Presently, LCA development activities leading to final operational clearance are in progress," it said.
