India And Japan Address Maritime And Cyber Security, Step-Up Regional And International Security Ties

India and Japan have recently concluded discussing the cooperation in key bilateral areas; including maritime, cyber and outer space security, in Tokyo where foreign and Defence secretaries of both nations were present. Both countries also held talks pertaining to regional and international security situation as part of the 2nd India-Japan 2+2 Dialogue, according to Indian Foreign Ministry. The 2nd India-Japan 2+2 Dialogue involved the foreign and Defence secretaries of both nations reviewing the bilateral security and Defence cooperation. Pen Drives Usage Threat to National Security

The use of banned pen drives has emerged as the main threat to cyber security in Defence forces as it is responsible for over 70 per cent of such breaches there. The use of pen drives as an easy-to-carry storage device has increased in the recent past and internal reports have confirmed that over 70 per cent cyber security breaches in the armed forces are due to their unauthorised use, Army officials said. "These pen drives, which are mostly manufactured in China, have emerged as a big threat to our cyber security systems," they said. Indian Navy Creates Dedicated Cyber Security Cadre

The Indian Navy has become the first Indian armed force to create a dedicated cadre of officers to provide the service cyber security to protect its computer-enabled communication networks from hacking and other cyber terror attacks and to enable the maritime force to carry out a network-centre operation. Indian Navy officers said here that the force is looking at recruiting men as short service commissioned officers and the first batch of such computer science, information technology and engineering graduates in December 2012. Move Beyond Buyer-Seller Relationship, Antony to US

Looking to spend over USD 100 billion in weapons procurement over the next decade, India has asked the United States to move beyond the buyer-seller relationship and provide access to high tech items and transfer of technology of key equipment. During a meeting with his US counterpart Leon Panetta, Antony said, "the priority for India is to move beyond the buyer-seller transactions and to focus on transfer of technologies and partnerships to build indigenous capabilities.” Read More...

New Safety Organisation Envisaged For Indian Navy

Indian Navy is envisaging having a new 'Safety Organisation' to enhance safe operations of its warships, submarines and aircraft in view of its increasing fleet strength planned over the next decade. This issue was discussed at the just concluded naval commanders conference held in New Delhi. Indian Navy has had mishaps in the recent months involving its warships and submarines such as merchant vessel MV Nordlake ramming into INS Vindhyagiri when the warship was entering the Mumbai harbour in January 2011 and the mishap on INS Shakush submarine that claimed the life of a navy commander.
