DAC Approves 22 Cheetal Choppers For Army
With the armed forces marred by long delays in replacing the vintage Cheetah/ Chetak choppers, Defence Ministry has approved a proposal to procure around 22 Cheetal helicopters for Army. The Army is planning to deploy these choppers for supporting its high altitude operations in Ladakh and Siachen. A meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the apex Ministry body headed by Defence Minister A K Antony to decide on procurements, cleared the proposal to procure around 22 Cheetal choppers for Army, Defence Ministry officials said.

A K Antony Will Today Review Major Military Modernisation Projects
Amid apprehensions over a possible budget cut, the Defence Minister A K Antony will today review major military modernisation projects of the Armed Forces such as plans for acquiring 126 combat aircraft and raising a Strike Corps in the northeastern sector. In a meeting with the three Services vice chiefs, Defence Minister AK Antony will review the expenditure made by the Armed Forces this year and their plans for the remaining part of the fiscal, Ministry officials said. The meeting comes at a time when there is a possibility of a budget cut in view of the economic slowdown. The Defence Ministry has been allocated Rs 1.93 lakh crore.

I44 upgraded Bofors guns approved for Army: A K Antony
Defence Ministry has cleared a proposal to induct 144 indigenously-developed Bofors 155mm howitzers into the Army for which trials will be held later this year. The 155mm artillery guns are being developed indigenously by the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) in Jabalpur on the basis of Transfer of Technology of the controversial Swiss Bofors guns, which were inducted into the Army in late 1980s. "The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has cleared a proposal for production of 144 155mm guns (in the Army). Winter trials will take place in December and summer trials in June," Defence Minister A K Antony said here.

DAC Clears Truck Scanners For Army
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has cleared a proposal worth over Rs 55 crore to buy two truck scanners for the Army, which will deploy them to scan cargo in Jammu and Kashmir. The full body scanners will enhance the capability of the army to detect arms and ammunition and chemicals also and a proposal in this regard was cleared in a meeting headed by Defence Minister A K Antony, they said. The scanning equipment is required by the Army to be deployed at places in Jammu and Kashmir where cross-border trade routes have been opened across the Line of Control (LoC). The Army will now issue a global Request for Proposal (RFP).

Antony reviews indigenous howitzer project
Defence Minister A K Antony today reviewed the progress on two types of indigenous artillery howitzers being developed for the army by the Ordnance Factory Board at its facility in Jabalpur. During his one-day visit to Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, the Defence Minister will also visit the vehicle factory which manufactures trucks for the army. The army, which has failed to induct even a single artillery gun in the last 25 years, is eagerly waiting for the indigenously manufactured guns which are being developed after the transfer of technology of the controversial Bofors guns. Recently, Antony had said the two types of howitzers for the army will be ready for trials by December and by June next year respectively.
