India Completes Phase-1 of Coastal Surveillance Network on Mainland

India has successfully completed the phase-1 of its ambitious plan to have a gap-free coastal surveillance network (CSN) with the installation of 36-radar chain. The completion of the phase-I of the project on the Indian mainland took place when Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh inaugurated the static sensor chain at Visakhapatnam on November 23. India has already installed a chain of 36 radars along the Maharashtra, Gujarat and Kerala coast in the phase-1 of the CSN on the mainland. Under the Phase-1 alone, another 10 radars are to be installed in the island territories of Andaman and Nicobar and the Laskhadweep and Minicoy by mid-2013. Read More...

Defence Ministry Struggles to Get Budget Allocation

Defence Ministry is struggling to get even its allocated budget of Rs 1.93 lakh crore allotted by the government in the budget and is not hopeful of getting the additional Rs 40000 crore demanded by it for modernisation. "Now I am struggling to get the budgetary amount," he told reporters here when asked if he was hopeful of getting the additional Rs 40,000 crore sought by his ministry for modernising the three services. IAF Deal For VVIP Choppers Under Scanner

Defence Ministry is seeking details from the Italian government about its investigations into the deal for procuring 12 VVIP choppers for the IAF after an American-Italian person was arrested for allegedly paying kickbacks for securing the deal for Agusta Westland. American-Italian citizen Guido Ralph Haschke was arrested two days back in Switzerland in connection with an Italian investigation into the allegations but was released on bail yesterday. India had signed a deal with Agusta Westland in 2010 for 560 million Euro to supply 12 AW 101 choppers and deliveries are scheduled to begin in the early part of 2013. Read More...

CCS to Decide Acquisition of Invar Missile for Army’s T-90 Tanks and Brahmos Missile for IAF

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will be holding a crucial meeting this week which will decide the fate of two major proposals of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force (IAF). The CCS will be taking action on the Defence Ministry’s proposal to acquire over 20,000 of Invar missiles from Russia for T-90 tanks for the army as well as the procurement of air-launched version of the 290-km-range BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles for the IAF. Under the Indian Army proposal, 10,000 Invar missiles would be brought from Russian manufacturers whereas the remaining would be license-produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) under Transfer of Technology (ToT), they said. Navy to Find Alternative Place for Missile Firing Range

With Environment Ministry rejecting a proposal to set up a naval missile firing range in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Defence Ministry today said it will find an alternative site to develop its facility. The proposal to develop the missile firing range was rejected to protect the habitat of endangered bird species Nicobar Megapode, which is found only there. "I was in Port Blair along with all officials yesterday and had detailed discussions there. That particular area, there is a rare species of bird. There our decision is to find an alternative place," Defence Minister A K Antony said. The Minister was asked about the red-flagging of the Navy missile firing range project in Tillanchong Island in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Read More...
