CCS Approves 3-Fold Hike in Armed Forces Financial Powers

India has hiked the financial powers of its army, navy and air force headquarters three-fold to facilitate speedy purchases of essential defence equipment, weapons and systems. The revised financial powers, under which the three services headquarters can procure up to $30 million on their own, got the nod of the highest decision-making body, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). Defence Secretary on Oman visit

Aiming to build stronger military ties with Oman, Defence Secretary Shashikant Sharma is on a two-day visit to the Gulf country. During the visit, Sharma met the top military and political leadership of Oman and discussed ways of further strengthening the military relations between the two sides, Defence Ministry officials said here. The visit assumes significance in view of efforts on part of both the countries to strengthen their defence ties as Defence Minister A K Antony had travelled to Muscat couple of years ago and his counterpart visited here in 2011. India, Singapore To Hold Regular Minister-Level Meets

To enhance their military ties further, India and Singapore have agreed to hold regular Defence Minister-level dialogue on bilateral security issues from now on. This decision was taken at a meeting between India's Defence Minister AK Antony and his Singaporean counterpart Ng Eng Hen here on the occasion of the latter's bilateral visit to India. Gen Bikram Singh: Army has not changed its views on the importance of Siachen

Notwithstanding the Pakistani push for demilitarizing Siachen, Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh today said the force was not in favour of moving out from the icy heights over which a "lot of blood has been shed". It has conveyed its views to the Government which has to take a final decision in this regard. "It is very important and we must continue to hold that area and we have held that view always. We have lost our lives and lot of blood has been shed to get into these areas and occupy the heights and positions."These positions are of strategic importance and we have expressed our concerns to the Government and now it is for the Government to decide," Gen Singh said in a media interaction. India, Maldives Step up Defence Ties

India and Maldives have agreed to step up their Defence ties with a slew of measures, including basing Indian Dhruv helicopter in Male for two more years, training to Maldivian air force personnel and deploying Indian warships to secure Maldivian waters and exclusive economic zone. The two sides also agreed to work closely towards stability and ensure maritime security in the Indian Ocean region. At a high level meeting between Indian Defence Minister AK Antony and his Maldivian counterpart Colonel (Retd) Mohamed Nazim in Male, the two sides decided to "maintain close cooperation" in unitedly fighting against challenges of terrorists and non-state actors.
