State-Run Mazagon Dock Confirms JV with Pipavav Defence to Build Warships and Submarines

India’s largest private defence shipyard Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering has been chosen by state-run Mazagon Dock as a joint venture partner to build warships and submarines for Indian Navy. While the joint venture was stalled earlier due to a row over the Mazagon Dock’s selection policy, the joint venture now stands confirmed by the government. DCNS Supplies Indian Equipment for Scorpenes to MDL

French firm DCNS has supplied the first lot of India-made equipment to defence shipyard Mazagon Dockyards Limited (MDL) for fixing it on the six Scorpene submarines being constructed for the Navy at Mumbai. The defence shipyard is building six such submarines under a project worth over Rs 23,000 crore with transfer of technology from DCNS. Defence Shipyards Unhappy Over Global Tenders for Small Boats

Upset with the Defence Ministry's decision to hold global tenders for small boats such as Fast Interception Craft and patrol boats, public sector shipyards have registered their protest with the Government. We are talking about building our indigenous defence industry but we are awarding contracts for even small boats after global tenders. We have told the Ministry that it should either nominate the public sector shipyards for these requirements or allow only Indian companies including private players to meet these requirements. Bharat Electronic, Hindustan Aeronautics, Goa Shipyard Best Performers

India's Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has been recognised as the best performing exporter of military products for the year 2009-10 by presenting it the Award for Excellence by the defence ministry. Bangalore based BEL was presented the trophy by Defence Minister AK Antony for achieving exports worth $23.65 million in 2009-10, an increase of 33 per cent over the previous year. Read More...

Defence Production Part of 5-Year Plans for the First Time Ever

India's defence production department, the backbone of its defence industrial base, will for the first-time ever be part of the country's five-year planning process, with this branch of the Defence Ministry joining the exercise carried out by the Planning Commission for the 12th Plan Period from 2012 to 2017.
