DRDO Holds Parleys with Tata, L&T, BEL for Howitzers

Major Indian private and public sector players including Tata, Mahindra, L&T and BEL are holding parleys with DRDO for developing an indigenous advanced artillery howitzer for the Army. The premier defence research agency recently held an interaction with the stakeholders to explore the feasibility of involving Indian industries in the development of Advance Towed Artillery Guns System (ATAGS), DRDO officials said. "Objective of the interaction was to explore and encourage participation of Indian industries in the ATAGS project and generate a base for its design, development, manufacturing and integration," they said. India Signals Ballistic Missile Defence Will Be In Place Soon

India has signaled that it is ready to deploy a home-grown Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system in the near future with a successful testing of an advanced interceptor missile, prompting the defence scientists to claim a shield could be thrown over Delhi skies by 2014. The big fireworks over the Bay of Bengal when India tested its experimental BMD system resulted in elation as the trial turned out to be "bang-on accurate". The interceptor missile destroyed an incoming target missile in a direct hit at an altitude of nearly 15 km over the Bay of Bengal, demonstrating the efficacy of the system. DRDO officials said the electronically simulated target, which mimicked a missile coming from a distance of 1,500 km, was electronically hit at an altitude of 120 km. Read More...

IAF to Raise Four More Squadrons of Su-30 MKI Fighters

The IAF is all set to raise four more squadrons of Su-30 MKI fighter in the near future as it prepares to induct the tenth unit of the aircraft in Punjab along the Pakistan border. Codenamed 'Flying Lancers', the process to set up the new Number-15 squadron will be initiated in December and will be fully operational by middle of the next year, Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne said. "By the end of this year, in December, and early next year, we will be inducting a new Su-30 squadron, based in Punjab. That will be the tenth squadron of Su-30 and the process will continue for at least six months from January to June," he said. Read More...

Samtel Ties Up With Uk’s Curtiss-Wright Controls Defence Solutions For Manufacture Of Displays For Choppers

In one of the largest Defence orders offered to a private Indian firm by a global manufacturer, Samtel Avionics and Defence Systems have signed a contract estimated at Rs 500 crore with the UK-based Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions. As per the contract that was signed recently, Samtel will make high-definition, rugged liquid crystal cockpit displays for Curtiss-Wright's customers that include majors like Eurocopter, Sikorsky and Agusta Westland. According to Executive Director of Samtel Avionics Mr. P.Kalra, Samtel has signed a 7-year contract with British giant Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions. Read More...

Mahindra ends ties with blacklisted Rheinmetall

Mahindra Defence Systems (MDS) has ended all its ties with a blacklisted Swiss company for a project to produce surveillance radars for navy. MDS, a part of the Mahindra and Mahindra group, had tied up with Rheinmetall Air Defence-- a Zurich-based defence firm, for a proposed navy tender to produce surveillance radars for warships. "We have informed the Defence Ministry that we no longer have any tie-up with Rheinmetall Air Defence (RAD) and we will soon make an announcement about our new partner for the project," company officials said. The decision in this regard was taken by the company soon after the Defence Ministry blacklisted RAD along with Israeli IMI, Corporation Defence of Russia and Singapore Technologies Kinetics and two Indian firms for their alleged involvement in the multi-crore ordnance factory scam and debarred them for further business dealings for 10 years.
