Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has handed over to the Indian Navy the newly built INS Saryu, the largest offshore patrol vessel of the force. The indigenously-designed 105-metre vessel was handed over by GSL Chairman Rear Admiral (Retired) Vineet Bakhshi to Commander Amanpreet Singh, the Commanding Officer-designate of INS Saryu, in Goa, according to the shipyard officials. The offshore patrol vessel will help meet the Indian Navy's ever increasing requirement for undertaking ocean surveillance and surface warfare operations in order to prevent infiltration and transgression of maritime sovereignty, they said.

India's four Defence public sector shipyards are building a total of 61 warships and vessels for the maritime forces of the country. The four shipyards are Mumbai-based Mazagaon Docks Limited (MDL), Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Goa-based Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and Visakhapatnam-based Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), which is the latest entrant in governmental warship building in the country. MDL has 14 warships on order including the six Project-75 Scorpene submarines. It is also constructing a Project-17 Frigate of the Shivalik class.

India's Defence Ministry-owned Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) signed a contract with the government to build six Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), officials have said. The order is said to be worth $400 million or Rs.1,800 crore. "The vessels are based on in-house design of GSL, which has considerable expertise in designing and constructing a range of patrol vessels for the Indian Defence forces," the officials said.

The government has cleared the acquisition of six Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) expected to be worth around Rs 1,800 crore for the Coast Guard to enhance its maritime surveillance capabilities. A Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting, which was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, also cleared a proposal for acquiring around 500 Precision Guided Munitions (PGMs) for the fighter aircraft fleet of the IAF, defence sources told.

India has welcomed a new sail training ship into its fleet, while saying good bye to another training warship that put in 16 years of service and trained over 1,300 Indian Navy officers into fine leaders. INS Sudharshini, a three-masted barque, was commissioned into the Indian Navy service as the second sail training ship at Kochi in Kerala by Southern Naval Commander Vice Admiral KN Sushil. INS Krishna, the erstwhile British naval warship HMS Andromeda, cast off from Kochi naval base for one last time to Mumbai, where it will be decommissioned from service later this year.
