First Scorpene Induction In Indian Navy By 2015
To augment its depleting conventional submarine fleet, India will induct six Scorpene submarines currently being built at Mumbai's Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL) only from 2015, a full three years behind its original schedule of 2012. The project to build the Scorpenes with technology borrowed from France's DCNS has already had a cost escalation of nearly Rs.5,000 crore or $1 billion. All the six submarines will be inducted by 2018.
Indian Navy Takes Over Russian Nerpa Submarine
India added teeth to its submarine fleet and became the world's sixth operator of a nuclear-powered submarine when Russia's K-152 Nerpa nuclear-powered attack submarine was handed over to the Indian Navy at a ceremony in the far Eastern Primorye territory of the Russian Federation on January 23, 2012. The submarine, with NATO codename Akula-II, will be on a 10-year lease with Indian Navy till 2022 under a contract that was signed between the two countries worth over $900 million, according to Indian Navy sources.
DRDO Developing Air Independent Propulsion for Indian Submarines
India's premier defence research agency is in the process of developing the 'Air Independent Propulsion (AIP)' technology that will enable future Indian-built submarines stay underwater for longer than a conventional submarine. The full scale operation of a land-based prototype of the indigenously built AIP system is likely to be demonstrated by 2015. Defence Minister A K Antony told parliament in written reply to a question that Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO)'s Ambernath-based Naval Material Research Laboratory (NMRL) is working on a technology demonstration project for "Development of Land-based Prototype for AIP" for submarine propulsion.
Government sets Deadline for Mazagon Docks For Scorpene Submarine Delivery
The bleak status of the Indian Navy's submarine fleet which is facing obsolescence has led the Indian government to implement some tough deadlines on public-sector Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL) for the delivery of new submarines. A tight schedule has been set for MDL by the government for the delivery of six diesel-electric Scorpene submarines wherein MDL must deliver one submarine every six months starting August 2015.
India Speeds up Submarine Acquisitions, Creates a New Post in Indian Navy
With a dismal underwater combat capability due to the tardy rate of acquisition of submarines, Indian Navy plans to oversee and fast-track all its submarine acquisition plans to match its fleet with that of its neighboring countries. To ensure the follow-up on Indian Navy’s submarine acquisition plan, Rear Admiral M T Moraes has been appointed as the new assistant chief of naval staff (submarines), a post in the Indian Navy which has resurfaced after many years.
