Decision on Acquiring 197 Light Utility Helicopters for the Armed Forces by Next Month

India’s prestigious helicopter acquisition plans may finally get clearer by the end of the month as the Defence Ministry scrutinizes the report submitted by a special technical committee regarding the acquisition process. The deal to procure 197 light utility helicopters for the Army and Air Force was stalled due to complaints of tender deviations. The Technical Oversight Committee has now submitted a report to the Defence ministry and the decision to either scrap or go ahead with the deal will be finalized after studying the report. Indian Army's Combat Chopper, UAV Fleets Demand Gets Boost

Boosting the prospect of the Indian Army having its own fleet of combat helicopters, apart from unmanned aerial vehicles, Defence Minister AK Antony has discussed the proposals with army chief General Bikram Singh, his ministry top brass and the army seniors. At a nearly two-hour meeting in South Block, the seat of Defence ministry and headquarters of the army, Antony also asked the army top brass to focus and give priority to procure equipment and systems that are critically needed by it. Antony Reviews Deficiencies, Requirements of Army

Looking to modernise the armed forces, Defence Minister A K Antony today reviewed the preparedness of the army in a meeting where the deficiencies and requirements of the force were discussed. During the over 90-minute meeting, Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh presented the army's perspective with regard to capital procurements, development of infrastructure and requirements of ammunition, Defence Ministry officials said here. HAL’s Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) to Undergo Week-Long Trials in Tamil Nadu

The Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), developed to cater to the needs of the IAF and the Indian Army, is all set to undergo sea-level trials near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The LCH is a multirole combat helicopter being developed by state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). According to reports, the sea-level trials in Tamil Nadu will carry on for a week or more. As reported by the media, a prototype of the LCH has arrived in Tambaram (Tamil Nadu) along with a Mi-8 helicopter from the IAF’s Yelahanka station. Read More...

US Expects Hike in Arms Sales to India

After emerging as one of the top arms supplier to India over the last decade with nearly $8-billion worth of deals, the US is expecting to further hike its military sales to the South Asian nation in 2013 too, building on the boost in the bilateral ties between the two countries and the successful visit of American Defence Secretary Leon Panetta to New Delhi last week. “We are hopeful that arms sales to India will increase.
