IAF to Focus on Operation Capabilities
Admitting that it was passing through "challenging" times, the Indian Air Force (IAF) today stated that it focus in next two years will be to enhance operational capabilities and security. "The IAF is going through a very busy and a challenging period and our focus now, at all times must be on three priority areas--operational capability, infrastructure and security, especially in view of new inductions in the force's inventory," Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne said while addressing the three-day Commanders' Conference which began here this morning. Air Force officials said the focus of the conference is on critical Electronic Warfare Systems required by the force. The meeting will also do "a thorough review of the external and internal security situation, as also the ramifications in the next two years", they said.
India to Continue Extending Training Facilities to Singapore Air Force
India will continue to extend facilities to Singapore to continue training of its air force pilots at a facility in Kalaikunda air base in West Bengal. An agreement to extend the arrangement for another five years was signed by India and Singapore during the three-day visit of Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to India. The deal was inked by Indian Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma and Singapore Permanent Secretary for Defence Chiang Chie Foo after Lee held talks with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh.
IAF to Turn Kargil Airfield in Kashmir Into an Air Force Base
In a move that may upset India’s neighbours, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has decided to convert the airport at Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) into a full-fledged air force base. The J&K government has announced that the IAF will be making an air force base in Kargil and the issue of land allocation is being sorted currently. IAF will operate medium, heavy-lift as well as combat aircraft from Kargil in the near future. According to the J&K government, the Kargil airport is to be extended by 1,500 feet to create an IAF base and the Indian Defence Ministry will be assigned with this work.
India to Buy 110 Microlite Planes For National Cadet Corps
India's National Cadets Corps (NCC), the country's official youth outfit for military training, is procuring 110 microlite aircraft to train its air wing cadets in flying techniques, apart from providing them with an adventure activity that will literally take them to the skies. These aircraft would be bought off-the-shelf. A Request for Proposal (RFP) for these planes was issued in May 2010 to global microlite manufacturers. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is helping the NCC in procuring these microlite planes and a decision on the winner of the deal will be announced.
IAF's Israeli-Supplied Aerostat Damaged, Non-Operational
India's Parliament was Wednesday informed that one of Indian Air Force's (IAF) Aerostats supplied by Israeli defence firm Rafael has been damaged and that it is non-operational. Defence Minister AK Antony, in reply to questions from members of parliament in Rajya Sabha (House of States) the two Aerostat were bought by India from Rafael in 2002 and these two radars were supplied to IAF in 2007 and 2008 respectively. He also said the IAF was making efforts to recover the damaged Aerostat.
