IAF Deal For VVIP Choppers Under Scanner
Defence Ministry is seeking details from the Italian government about its investigations into the deal for procuring 12 VVIP choppers for the IAF after an American-Italian person was arrested for allegedly paying kickbacks for securing the deal for Agusta Westland. American-Italian citizen Guido Ralph Haschke was arrested two days back in Switzerland in connection with an Italian investigation into the allegations but was released on bail yesterday. India had signed a deal with Agusta Westland in 2010 for 560 million Euro to supply 12 AW 101 choppers and deliveries are scheduled to begin in the early part of 2013.

CCS to Decide Acquisition of Invar Missile for Army’s T-90 Tanks and Brahmos Missile for IAF
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will be holding a crucial meeting this week which will decide the fate of two major proposals of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force (IAF). The CCS will be taking action on the Defence Ministry’s proposal to acquire over 20,000 of Invar missiles from Russia for T-90 tanks for the army as well as the procurement of air-launched version of the 290-km-range BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles for the IAF. Under the Indian Army proposal, 10,000 Invar missiles would be brought from Russian manufacturers whereas the remaining would be license-produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) under Transfer of Technology (ToT), they said.

Navy to Find Alternative Place for Missile Firing Range
With Environment Ministry rejecting a proposal to set up a naval missile firing range in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Defence Ministry today said it will find an alternative site to develop its facility. The proposal to develop the missile firing range was rejected to protect the habitat of endangered bird species Nicobar Megapode, which is found only there. "I was in Port Blair along with all officials yesterday and had detailed discussions there. That particular area, there is a rare species of bird. There our decision is to find an alternative place," Defence Minister A K Antony said. The Minister was asked about the red-flagging of the Navy missile firing range project in Tillanchong Island in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Indian Army to Get Own Attack Helicopters Fleet
Indian Army's plans to have a fleet of attack helicopters to provide air power support to its fighting units on the ground got a boost, with the Defence Ministry settling in its favor a long festering dispute it had with the Indian Air Force (IAF) on who would hold the air assets. However, its other plan to have a medium helicopter fleet for tactical air lift has been struck down, with the Defence Ministry deciding that the IAF will be force that will carry out logistics for the army troops in the foreseeable future too. The decisions were intimated by the Defence Ministry to the army and the air force through a letter, after National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon advised Defence Minister AK Antony in the matter.

India May Impose $120 Million Penalty on Russia for Gorshkov Delay
India may impose a $120-million penalty on a Russian shipyard if the delivery of the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier to the Indian Navy is delayed beyond the schedule in December 2012. This was stated by an Indian defence ministry official, who noted that the penalty will be five per cent of the $2.34 billion that India is paying to Russian shipyard Sevmash for the warship that has been rechristened INS Vikramaditya. It was scheduled for commissioning into Indian Navy on December 4 this year, but Russian media reports have suggested that the warship may join the Indian Navy only by October 2013.
