US multi-business major Textron, which has a robust defence presence, has said it appointed Inderjit Sial as president and managing director for India from October 29, succeeding N.R. Mohanty, who retired after six years with the company. "Inderjit brings with him 23 years of diverse industrial experience and his most recent position was managing director of Saab India Technologies, a position he held since 2010, after having joined Saab in 2008 as vice president industrial cooperation," the company announced in a media release. At Saab, Inderjit was responsible for government relations as well as business development.

With serious allegations of financial mismanagement against its organisations such as the Military Intelligence and DRDO, Defence Ministry has decided to put in place appropriate checks and balances to enhance transparency and accountability there. These efforts are being made by the Defence Minister to streamline the entire financial management system of all the departments under the Ministry, Defence Ministry officials said here. "With a view to bring in transparency and accountability in all organisations under it, the Defence Ministry is putting in place check and balance mechanisms especially in organisations where no such thing existed," they said.

The Indian government has approved a hike pension for retired military personnel and their families that will cost the nation's exchequer Rs.2,300 crore or $430 million annually.
"The Union Cabinet has approved the recommendations of the committee headed by Cabinet Secretary for benefits to ex-servicemen on four issues. The financial implications of the improvements made as per the Cabinet decision on the four items are broadly estimated at Rs.2300 crore per annum," a government official said. The decision is based on the recommendations of the committee set up by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in July headed by Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth that submitted is report in August."

Keeping a strong vigil near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and maintaining operational preparedness, the Indian military is conducting airdrops by paratroopers in Nyoma in east Ladakh (J&K) area. The combat drills near the LAC are part of India’s strategy to augment border security in view of the growing Chinese military presence and their infrastructure along the border. According to sources, the first-ever ‘static line paradrop’ from a heavy-lift Ilyushin-76 aircraft was conducted at Nyoma in eastern Ladakh during August end. The static line paradrop occurs when parachutes, linked to the plane with cords, open on exit in classic airborne infantry mode.

Aiming to strengthen military preparedness along the China border, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has cleared a proposal for raising the second battalion of Army's Arunachal Scouts. The CCS meeting here, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, cleared proposal to raise the second battalion of Arunachal Scouts to protect country's boundary with China in the northeastern state, sources said. In Scouts battalions, the officers are from the regular Army whereas the majority of the soldiers are drawn from local areas.
