The Indian Navy is planning to issue a bid for procuring more than 120 multirole choppers which could be world's largest tender expected to be worth around USD eight billion. The navy had recently issued a global request for information in this regard and has plans of acquiring more than 120 Naval Multirole Helicopters (NMRH), navy sources said here. The navy had recently asked global helicopter vendors to provide details about their choppers in this category and is planning to issue a global request for proposal in this regard in near future, they said. The navy is planning to procure these new NMRH for carrying out anti-submarine warfare, Special Forces.

An upgraded and refitted diesel-electric submarine from the Indian Navy fleet was handed back to India by Russia after ove two years of overhaul and refurbishing works. The major refit of the Russian-origin INS Sindurakshak (S63) was carried out at Russia's Zvezdochka shipyard. The upgrade and modernisation of Sindhurakshak, a Project 877 EKM NATO Kilo-class submarine, was done under a contract signed in June 201, according to officials. Under the refit programme, the submarine got Klub-S 3M54E1 anti-ship and 3M14E land attack 200-km-range cruise missiles systems retrofitted.

After four months of work on INS Vikramditya, which reported a boiler malfunction, Russia has completed the brick-lining work and is getting ready to take the Indian Navy warship out for sea trials in the Barents by June this year.
The Russian-built warship, the erstwhile Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier, will be ready to join the Indian Navy fleet as per the revised schedule of last quarter of 2013, senior Indian Navy officers said here. Incidentally, The Indian Navy's this year tableau during the Republic Day parade will be a replica of the 44,500-tonne Vikramaditya.

The U.S. and Indian navies have started the bilateral exercise INDIAEX 2012 aimed at demonstrating cooperation between the U.S. submarine rescue system and Indian submarines. The exercise started this week off the coast of Mumbai and is expected to last till mid-November. The at-sea portion of the exercise is scheduled from Oct. 30 to Nov. 6. During the INDIAEX-2012 exercise, four Indian navy submarines are scheduled to participate with the U.S. Navy's Undersea Rescue Command (URC) to practice rescue scenarios which demonstrate URC's Submarine Rescue Diving and Recompression System (SRDRS).

Despite political pressure from Tamil Nadu, Defence Ministry has decided to go ahead with the Indian Navy’s joint exercises with Sri Lanka called SLINEX. However, the growing resistance of Tamil Nadu against military cooperation with Sri Lanka has led to the decision that the joint exercises with the island nation must be held far from the four south Indian states. According to Indian Navy, the next edition of SLINEX-series exercises with Sri Lankan Navy will be held away from the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka as advised by Defence Ministry.
