INS Arihant Sea Trials By Month-end, Induction End-2013

India is readying its home-built INS Arihant nuclear-powered submarine for sea trials by this month end and its possible induction by end of 2013. INS Arihant will help India to complete its nuclear weapons triad – the capability to fire nuke-tipped missiles from land, air and sea – a key deterrent and a major boost to its proclaimed second-strike capability, as stated in its nuclear weapons doctrine. The 6,000-tonne submarine is at present under harbour-acceptance trials at the naval docks at Visakhapatnam. India, US to Exercise Submarine Rescue Operations

Ill-equipped to carry out a submarine rescue operations in case of an underwater accident, India will join hands with the US to learn the tricks of the trade by holding a joint exercise on the specialist job later this month. India already has a tie-up with the US for help and equipment to rescue submariners stuck inside a vessel in case there is an underwater accident in any of its 14 diesel-electric submarines currently in service. According to sources, the US will bring a submarine rescue system, which is a Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV) or a Submarine Rescue Chamber (SRC), for the exercise to train the Indian Navy personnel in rescue acts. Navy Chief Assures Sea Trials of Homegrown Nuclear Submarine INS Arihant Soon

The Indian Navy is poised to complete the country’s nuclear triad as the homegrown nuclear submarine INS Arihant is expected to be launched for sea trials soon. According to Indian Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma, INS Arihant is steadily progressing towards its operationalisation and sea trials are expected in the coming months. Speaking at his farewell press conference, Indian Navy Chief Nirmal Verma stated that a credible retaliatory strike capability is a must considering India has a no-first-use commitment. India develops SLBM for INS Arihant

Pumping itself up in the elite club of nations, India has successfully developed its first submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) for the indigenous nuclear submarine 'INS Arihant'. The SLBM, which can be launched from Arihant, has been developed successfully, sources said here. Senior DRDO Scientist and Director of Hyderabad-based Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) A K Chakrabarti was honoured today by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at a function here for his "outstanding contributions in the successful development of the first SLBM system for the nuclear powered platform Arihant." New Safety Organisation Envisaged For Indian Navy

Indian Navy is envisaging having a new 'Safety Organisation' to enhance safe operations of its warships, submarines and aircraft in view of its increasing fleet strength planned over the next decade. This issue was discussed at the just concluded naval commanders conference held in New Delhi. Indian Navy has had mishaps in the recent months involving its warships and submarines such as merchant vessel MV Nordlake ramming into INS Vindhyagiri when the warship was entering the Mumbai harbour in January 2011 and the mishap on INS Shakush submarine that claimed the life of a navy commander.
