India To Construct Two More Arihant Nuclear Submarines For Navy
In a move that has raised concerns in the neighboring nations, India has decided to construct two more nuclear powered Arihant-class submarines. The addition of these submarines will not only be a strategic asset to the navy but will also put India in the exclusive club of nations with such platforms. India is scheduled to induct the first two nuclear submarines, the first being the indigenous INS Arihant and the Russian-leased Akula class INS Chakra, in the near future.
Indian Navy Takes Over Russian Nerpa Submarine
India added teeth to its submarine fleet and became the world's sixth operator of a nuclear-powered submarine when Russia's K-152 Nerpa nuclear-powered attack submarine was handed over to the Indian Navy at a ceremony in the far Eastern Primorye territory of the Russian Federation on January 23, 2012. The submarine, with NATO codename Akula-II, will be on a 10-year lease with Indian Navy till 2022 under a contract that was signed between the two countries worth over $900 million, according to Indian Navy sources.
Indian Navy’s First Nuclear Submarine to Arrive End of the Month
The Indian Navy has taken possession of the Akula-II class Nerpa submarine which it is leasing from Russia for 10 years. The Nerpa nuclear-powered attack submarine, to be re-christened INS Chakra, has set sail for India from far-east Russia, making India a part of the nuclear submarine operators' club in the world besides Britain, France, Russia, China and the US. The 8,000-tonne Nerpa submarine being leased from Russia will be India’s first nuclear-powered attack submarine.
Indian Navy to Complete the Nuclear Triad after Receiving Two Nuclear Submarines by Mid 2012
Indian Navy’s undersea warfare and nuclear strike capabilities will receive a major boost as India will be receiving two crucial submarines within a few months. INS Chakra, the first-generation Russian Nerpa Akula II class nuclear submarine, will be leased to India for ten years by the end of the current fiscal year while the indigenous submarine INS Arihant will be commissioned by mid 2012. The induction of nuclear submarines will complete India’s nuclear triad. These two submarines will be based in eastern seaboard in Visakhapatnam.
India Speeds up Submarine Acquisitions, Creates a New Post in Indian Navy
With a dismal underwater combat capability due to the tardy rate of acquisition of submarines, Indian Navy plans to oversee and fast-track all its submarine acquisition plans to match its fleet with that of its neighboring countries. To ensure the follow-up on Indian Navy’s submarine acquisition plan, Rear Admiral M T Moraes has been appointed as the new assistant chief of naval staff (submarines), a post in the Indian Navy which has resurfaced after many years.
