India To Construct Two More Arihant Nuclear Submarines For Navy

In a move that has raised concerns in the neighboring nations, India has decided to construct two more nuclear powered Arihant-class submarines. The addition of these submarines will not only be a strategic asset to the navy but will also put India in the exclusive club of nations with such platforms. Indian Navy Takes Over Russian Nerpa Submarine

India added teeth to its submarine fleet and became the world's sixth operator of a nuclear-powered submarine when Russia's K-152 Nerpa nuclear-powered attack submarine was handed over to the Indian Navy at a ceremony in the far Eastern Primorye territory of the Russian Federation on January 23, 2012. Indian Navy’s First Nuclear Submarine to Arrive End of the Month

The Indian Navy has taken possession of the Akula-II class Nerpa submarine which it is leasing from Russia for 10 years. The Nerpa nuclear-powered attack submarine, to be re-christened INS Chakra, has set sail for India from far-east Russia, making India a part of the nuclear submarine operators' club in the world besides Britain, France, Russia, China and the US. Indian Navy to Complete the Nuclear Triad after Receiving Two Nuclear Submarines by Mid 2012

Indian Navy’s undersea warfare and nuclear strike capabilities will receive a major boost as India will be receiving two crucial submarines within a few months. INS Chakra, the first-generation Russian Nerpa Akula II class nuclear submarine, will be leased to India for ten years by the end of the current fiscal year while the indigenous submarine INS Arihant will be commissioned by mid 2012.
