INS Tarkash Goes For Sea Trials in Russia

INS Tarkash, a modern frigate that Russia is building for the Indian Navy, has gone out of the Kaliningrad-based Yantar Shipyard for its sea trials ahead of its induction by the end of 2012. Tarkash is the second ship in the three-ship $1.6-billion order from India to Russia to build upgraded Talwar-class frigates. The first ship in this Talwar class follow-on order, INS Teg, was handed over to India in April this year. INS Teg Frigate Induction on April 27

India has set April 27 as the date for inducting INS Teg, a guided missile frigate built in Russia, into the Indian Navy. Indian Navy Chief of Material Vice Admiral Ganesh Mahadevan was quoted as saying in New Delhi that INS Teg, the first of the three Teg-class frigates, will be handed over to the Indian Navy at the Yantar shipyard in Russia. Indian Navy to Induct New Stealth Frigates

The Indian Navy will witness a significant leap in its fleet of stealth frigates with the induction of two of the Project-17 stealth frigate this year besides the induction of a Russian-built frigate as well. INS Satpura, the 6,200 tonne stealth frigate is to be commissioned by mid-2011 while the Russian-built 4,900-tonne INS Teg will be ready for induction by October. Besides this, the floating of another Russian frigate, INS Trikand for Indian Navy will also take place this week.
