Battle of Choppers between IAF Army Intensifies, Antony to Intervene
The battle between the Army and the IAF for controlling attack helicopters was a "family problem" and the government was trying to find a solution for it, Defence Minister A K Antony said today. The Army has been demanding the control over attack and medium-lift helicopters saying they are mainly used for its operations and that is why they should be under it. The IAF, which operates two squadrons of Russian-origin Mi-35/25 attack choppers, has been opposing the demand. "There is no tussle and there is no war. These are all family problems and we will find a solution. We are in the final stages of finding the solution amicably," he told reporters.
Formal Induction of the Russian Mi-17 V5 into the IAF Today
The formal induction of the Russian-made medium-lift Mi-17V5 helicopters into the Indian Air Force (IAF) is scheduled for today. Till date, Russia has already delivered 21 of the 80 Mi-17s choppers ordered under the $1.34-billion deal in 2008. The induction ceremony will take place at the Palam airbase in the presence of Defence Minister A K Antony. The IAF has stated that the deployment of the first squadrons of the new Mi-17s choppers will be at Bhatinda and Srinagar. The induction of the Russian choppers will enable the force to make other choppers available for various crucial on-going operations.
Defence Ministry Urged by Armed Forces to Speed up Helicopter Acquisitions
Indian Defence Ministry is currently in the process of finalizing helicopter gunships for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the winner will either be the US-made AH 64 D Apache Longbow or the Russian Mil Mi 28 (Havoc) from Russia. The deal, exclusive of weapons and ammunition, is to be to the tune of $ 550 million and a decision is expected this month.
