Strengthening indigenous missile development capabilities, India today successfully test-fired the 290-km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the integrated test range at Chandipur off the coast of Orissa. The 32nd test-firing was part of the development trials of the missile which has already been inducted into the Army and the Navy. The objective of the mission was to evaluate some of the newer subsystems which are produced from the Indian industry as part of production stabilisation, BrahMos officials said adding more than 25 such systems were incorporated in the development missile. The launch was primarily aimed at testing the new power systems, materials for airframe components, guidance scheme and various electric systems, they said.

India added muscle to its naval fleet by formally inducting INS Teg, a guided missile frigate, into service at an impressive ceremony at the Yantar shipyard in Russia's Kaliningrad yesterday. INS Teg, the first of the class to be fitted with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles under the six Krivak-III Talwar class warships, was commissioned as an Indian naval ship by Vice Admiral KN Sushil, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, India's Southern Naval Command. INS Talwar, INS Trishul and INS Tabar, inducted between 2002 and 2003, do not carry BrahMos, but are equipped with the Klub cruise missiles.

Against the backdrop of the Army Chief highlighting critical shortage of shells for armoured regiments, a Defence Ministry report has said that a contract was signed with Russia in 2010 for 16,000 rounds of ammunition for T-90 tanks. In its annual report issued recently, the Defence Ministry said a contract for procurement of 66,000 rounds of ammunition for 84 mm rocket launchers was signed in March last year with Swedish Saab. "A contract for procurement of 16,000 rounds of FSAPDS ammunition for tank T-90 was signed with Rosoboronexport, Russia in December 2010.

US defence major Raytheon has started the process to enhance capabilities of Air Force's Jaguar fighter aircraft fleet by enabling it to fire latest precision guided munitions. "Raytheon has started procuring components required to build the Munitions Control Units (MCU) for 126 of the Indian Air Force's Jaguar Darin II attack aircraft," the company said in a statement. MCU enables integration of modern weapons on older aircraft with minimal modifications to aircraft wiring and the flight or stores management software.

With a Mirage-2000 fighter plane of the IAF crashing earlier this week in Rajasthan, the IAF has decided to ground the entire fleet of Mirage planes and conduct preliminary checks. This is the second mishap in the gap of 11 days involving the Mirage-2000 fighter raising questions about the credibility of the fighters and security concerns in the force. As for the accident involving the Mirage fighter, it occurred soon after the aircraft took off from an airbase in Gwalior. The crash took place near Jaipur but both IAF pilots ejected safely and there was no damage to life or civilian property.
