Army, IAF Aerial Battle over Apaches

Against the backdrop of Army’s plans to seek transfer of attack helicopters from the IAF, Air Force Chief N A K Browne on Sunday said the soon-to-be-procured Apache choppers from the US would remain with it as it was an ongoing acquisition. “The Apaches are going to be with us only as it is an ongoing acquisition process,” Air Chief Marshal Browne said on the sidelines of a 1971 war anniversary function. When asked to clarify whether the Apaches were being procured from the US would be with the IAF or the Army. Browne said the Apaches are not just for taking out enemy tanks or for air-to-ground operations but they can be used for multiple tasks such as taking out enemy radar stations and for air-to-air missions. In the battle of helicopters, the Indian Army has emerged victorious as the Defence Ministry has decided to give control of the choppers to it despite a strong opposition from the Air Force. The Army has been demanding the control over attack and medium-lift helicopters saying they are mainly used for its operations and that is why they should be under it. The IAF, which operates two squadrons of Russian-origin Mi-35/25 attack choppers, has been opposing the demand. "There is no tussle and there is no war. These are all family problems and we will find a solution. We are in the final stages of finding the solution amicably," he told reporters. Read More...

IAF to Acquire 56 Aircraft from Global Vendors, Private Sector Preferred Over Hal

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has taken a bold decision on Monday which tilts in the favour of the private sector players in the Defence sector. The DAC has decided to issue a global tender worth roughly $ 2.4 billion for 56 aircraft which will replace the ageing fleet Of Avro aircraft with the IAF. The decision will enable foreign vendors to enter into a tie-up with a private or public sector company in India. The current decision by DAC has definitely sidelined traditional PSU’s like Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and is seen as a bold move. As for the international vendor who wins the tender, it will be working with a private sector Indian firm company, thereby ruling out state-run HAL as a contender. Read More...
