INS Arihant Sea Trials By Month-end, Induction End-2013
India is readying its home-built INS Arihant nuclear-powered submarine for sea trials by this month end and its possible induction by end of 2013. INS Arihant will help India to complete its nuclear weapons triad – the capability to fire nuke-tipped missiles from land, air and sea – a key deterrent and a major boost to its proclaimed second-strike capability, as stated in its nuclear weapons doctrine. The 6,000-tonne submarine is at present under harbour-acceptance trials at the naval docks at Visakhapatnam. India had unveiled INS Arihant in July 2009 and it has been built with major help from Russia.
Nerpa Inducted Into Indian Navy, Adds Teeth to Submarine Fleet
India has added teeth to its underwater combat capability by inducting the Russian-origin nuclear submarine, christened INS Chakra, into its fleet, becoming only the sixth navy in the world to operate a nuclear-powered vessel. Defence Minister AK Antony formally inducted the Akula-II class submarine 'K-152 Nerpa', which will be with the Indian Navy on a 10-year lease from Russia at a cost of nearly $900 million, at the Ship Building Complex in Vishakapatnam, along the Andhra Pradesh coast on the Bay of Bengal.
Indian Navy’s First Nuclear Submarine to Arrive End of the Month
The Indian Navy has taken possession of the Akula-II class Nerpa submarine which it is leasing from Russia for 10 years. The Nerpa nuclear-powered attack submarine, to be re-christened INS Chakra, has set sail for India from far-east Russia, making India a part of the nuclear submarine operators' club in the world besides Britain, France, Russia, China and the US. The 8,000-tonne Nerpa submarine being leased from Russia will be India’s first nuclear-powered attack submarine.
