India to Remain Favorite Aerospace, Defence Destination

India is poised to become a favorite destination for global aerospace and defence sector players with total offset opportunity for the commercial segment in the country set to cross $10 billion mark in 2013. With the government expected to raise the foreign investment limit from 26 percent to 49 percent in the defence sector in 2013, the country is likely to witness the next rush of investments, as per a recent study by Deloitte, a global consultancy firm. Maini Group To Unveil Expansion Plan At Aero India

The Maini Group, a key Indian defence company, has announced that it would be sharing details regarding its expansion plans at the Aero India 2013 to be held at Yelahanka air base in Bangalore from February 6 to 10. The group has acquired industrial land in preparation for its expansion of plant facilities and is concentrating on long-term aerospace and defence strategic plans spanning the next two decades. For this purpose, it is currently in talks with global and domestic aerospace leaders in order to explore the right opportunities, the company said here. Army, IAF Aerial Battle over Apaches

Against the backdrop of Army’s plans to seek transfer of attack helicopters from the IAF, Air Force Chief N A K Browne on Sunday said the soon-to-be-procured Apache choppers from the US would remain with it as it was an ongoing acquisition. “The Apaches are going to be with us only as it is an ongoing acquisition process,” Air Chief Marshal Browne said on the sidelines of a 1971 war anniversary function. When asked to clarify whether the Apaches were being procured from the US would be with the IAF or the Army. Browne said the Apaches are not just for taking out enemy tanks or for air-to-ground operations but they can be used for multiple tasks such as taking out enemy radar stations and for air-to-air missions. CCEA to Discuss 10 Per Cent HAL Disinvestment

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs will today consider a proposal for disinvestment of 10 per cent of government equity in the country's only state-owned aerospace firm Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The government expects to raise at least Rs 2500 crore by divesting 10 per cent from the company having 100 per cent share-holding in it, sources said. The disinvestment proposal has been mooted before the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs amid government's plans to modernise the company for which Rs 20,000 crore would be required over next five years. Indian Army to Send 400 Troops for Indo-US Exercise At Fort Bragg in US

The Indian Army has indicated that for the first time, it will be sending about 400 soldiers to Fort Bragg in May for a military exercise with the 82nd Airborne Division. The ‘Yudh-Abhyas’ exercise will take place between May 3 to May 17 and about 400 U.S. soldiers will also be involved. The 82nd Airborne Division is an active duty airborne infantry division of the United States Army. The exercise ‘Yudh Abhyas’ has been taking place for many years between India and US and it will be an exchange of combat units. The exercise takes place in India and US alternatively every year.
