Govt Cancels USD 1 Bn Howitzer Tender, Initiates New Process

After scrapping a tender worth USD one billion to procure 180 self-propelled howitzers, the Indian Army has initiated a fresh process in this regard. The tender was cancelled recently following complaints of snags in the guns of one of the two companies in the race for the deal, sources said here. The two companies in the race included Konstrukta of Slovakia and Rheinmetall of Germany. After the cancellation of the tender, the Army has initiated a fresh process to procure the guns and issued a global request for Information (RFI) in this regard late last month. "Indian Army is planning to procure wheeled self-propelled artillery howitzers and we have sought details from global manufacturers in this regard," Army officials said here. Read More...

IAF pilots to train in Switzerland

Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne has said that the IAF will be sending pilots and other technical staff to Switzerland to undergo the three-month training on the aircraft as the 'Pilatus-PC 7' is expected to join the fleet from January 2013. "We will be sending our pilots and about 75 technicians to Switzerland for training. They will be coming back after three months of training there. And from January (2013) onward the PC-7 aircraft will start to join in the academy," he said, adding the entire delivery of the aircraft is expected to be completed by July 2014. Defence Ministry and IAF Reveal Shortcomings in the Air Force to Parliament Standing Committee

The Indian Defence Ministry as well as the top brass of the IAF has made a presentation in the Parliament which echoes the dismal state of the air force in the country. The Parliamentary Standing Committee has been informed that IAF has a severe shortage of trainer aircraft, simulators, fighter squadrons as well as airfields. Japan Offers Its Amphibious Multirole Aircraft to Indian Navy

After the recent Japanese visit by the Indian Defence Minister, military ties are scaling new heights as Japan has offered its amphibious aircraft for the Indian Navy indicating greater role in defence interactions. According to sources, ShinMaywa Corporation of Japan has been granted permission by Japanese government to respond to a global request for information (RFI) by the Indian Navy. This is the first time Japan has offered to sell multi-role amphibious aircraft, or for that matter any military equipment to another country. Read More...
