Three Global Firms Offer Amphibious Aircraft to Navy and IAF

Canadian Bombardier, Japanese Shinmaywa and Russian Beriev have offered their amphibious aircraft to meet requirements of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian navy for 15 such planes. The Navy and the IAF are looking to procure these aircraft amid heightened focus on aerial maritime surveillance over the Indian island territories of Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep. India's choice to meet its requirements for 126 combat planes is expected in the middle of January 2012. Kaveri Engine Completes 55-Hour Flight Tests on IL-76

India-made Kaveri engines have gone through 27 flights of 55 hours duration on the Russian-origin IL-76 aircraft, the Indian parliament has been informed. Defence Minister A.K. Antony told parliament that India has so far developed nine prototypes of the Kaveri engines and four prototypes of the Kabini (core engines). Both the indigenous engines have so far gone through a total of 2,050 hours of testing at both ground and altitude conditions for various requirements including performance, operability, endurance and environmental. IAF Chief Flies Sukhoi; Says It's Safe

Indian Air Force (IAF) chief Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne Wednesday flew on a Su-30MKI front line air superiority combat jet from the Lohegaon air base near Pune, in a bid to instill confidence in the air warriors on the safety of the Su-30MKI planes that had recently crashed near Pune on December 13. In Pune on a working visit, Browne flew on the Su-30MKI for about an hour, and later told the air warriors at the air base that the fleet of Sukhois is in good and capable hands. Read More...

Indian Navy to Complete the Nuclear Triad after Receiving Two Nuclear Submarines by Mid 2012

Indian Navy’s undersea warfare and nuclear strike capabilities will receive a major boost as India will be receiving two crucial submarines within a few months. INS Chakra, the first-generation Russian Nerpa Akula II class nuclear submarine, will be leased to India for ten years by the end of the current fiscal year while the indigenous submarine INS Arihant will be commissioned by mid 2012. The induction of nuclear submarines will complete India’s nuclear triad. These two submarines will be based in eastern seaboard in Visakhapatnam. Read More...
