DRDO To Develop Indigenous AWACS

India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has proposed to develop an indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS), described as an 'eye-in-the-sky' force multiplier that can keep a watch on enemy military activity, aircraft getting airborne or missile being fired. Defence Minister AK Antony informed the Indian Parliament on the DRDO proposal to begin work on the project called AWACS (India). "The project proposal for indigenous development of AWACS (India) has been submitted by the DRDO for government approval," Antony said in a written reply to a question from members of the Council of States. DAC Approves 22 Cheetal Choppers For Army

With the armed forces marred by long delays in replacing the vintage Cheetah/ Chetak choppers, Defence Ministry has approved a proposal to procure around 22 Cheetal helicopters for Army. The Army is planning to deploy these choppers for supporting its high altitude operations in Ladakh and Siachen. A meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the apex Ministry body headed by Defence Minister A K Antony to decide on procurements, cleared the proposal to procure around 22 Cheetal choppers for Army, Defence Ministry officials said. Army, IAF Aerial Battle over Apaches

Against the backdrop of Army’s plans to seek transfer of attack helicopters from the IAF, Air Force Chief N A K Browne on Sunday said the soon-to-be-procured Apache choppers from the US would remain with it as it was an ongoing acquisition. “The Apaches are going to be with us only as it is an ongoing acquisition process,” Air Chief Marshal Browne said on the sidelines of a 1971 war anniversary function. When asked to clarify whether the Apaches were being procured from the US would be with the IAF or the Army. Browne said the Apaches are not just for taking out enemy tanks or for air-to-ground operations but they can be used for multiple tasks such as taking out enemy radar stations and for air-to-air missions. US-made Chinook Outshines Russian Mi-26 as Lowest Bidder for IAF’s Heavy Lift Chopper Deal

The long awaited opening of the commercial bids for the 15 heavy-lift helicopter for Indian Air Force (IAF) has taken place and US firm Boeing’s Chinook helicopter has emerged as the lowest bidder in the race. Boeing’s Chinook has emerged as the winner over the Russian Mi-26 helicopter since it turned out to be more cost-effective for India. According to Defence Ministry, Boeing’s Chinook and Russian Mi-26 had both passed the extensive field trials held earlier but Boeing’s Chinook turned out to be lower in terms of its acquisition and life-cycle costs. Despite Gorshkov Delay, India to Acquire Russian Su-30mki and Medium-Lift Choppers

While the visiting Russian Defence Minister has confirmed yet another blow to the Indian Navy by declaring one year delay in Gorshkov carrier delivery, other major military deals are being materialized in New Delhi. India is gearing for the procurement of 42 Su-30 MKI combat aircraft and 71 medium-lift helicopters from Russia. Indian Defence Mister AK Antony and his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov have discussed the issue of the procurement of Su-30 MKI and medium-lift choppers in their meeting earlier. An agreement in this regard is expected to be signed during the visit of President Vladimir Putin on November 1 to India. Read More...
