MiG 27s to be phased out by 2017: IAF

Worried over problems in engines of its MiG-27 combat aircraft, Indian Air Force is planning to phase out these Russian-origin planes by 2017. IAF operates about 80 (four squadrons) of these aircraft in its fleet and due to the recurring problems in their engines, it had to ground all of them after a crash about two years ago. "We are planning to phase out the MiG-27s, of which around 80 are still in service, by the year 2017," senior IAF officials said. IAF has deployed two squadrons each of the aircraft in Jodhpur in Rajasthan and Kalaikunda in West Bengal at present. Read More...

Gorshkov Delivery Hit Again, To Arrive By Next Year-End

The Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov will be delivered to the Indian Navy only by the end of next year due to malfunctioning of the warship's engines during sea trials. The problems faced by the Gorshkov in its boilers are of very serious in nature and a big cause of concern for the Indian side as the warship had suffered a major fire accident due to the same reasons in 1994 after which it was lying unused as a junk for almost 10 years at the Sevmash shipyard, sources privy to the development informed Defencenow.com The warship was originally supposed to have been delivered by 2008 but it's handing over to the Indian Navy has been marred by cost overruns among other issues. INS Vikramaditya May Reach India Only In April 2013

With reports suggesting a delay in Russia delivering the refurbished INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier to India, the Indian Navy has noted that the symbolic handing over ceremony may still be held on the scheduled date of December 4 this year, but the $2.34-billion warship may reach Indian shores only by April 2013. Reports reaching here suggested that INS Vikramaditya, or erstwhile Admiral Gorshkov of the Russian Navy, had failed sea trials and its delivery to the Indian Navy may be again delayed by almost a year. The reason suggested for the delay in delivery was that during its 90-day-long sea trials, at one point seven of the aircraft carrier’s eight steam boilers broke down when run at maximum power to enable the ship touch top speeds of 30 knots. Defence Minister Admits Flaw in Recent Brahmos Test, Delay in Tejas LCA Clearance

Indian Defence PSUs have yet again dampened the spirit of the Indian Armed Forces since the Defence Ministry has indicated that the last test of the Indo-Russian BrahMos missile was not fully successful. Added to this, it has also been revealed that the indigenous Tejas LCA is facing more delays and will not get initial operational clearance (IOC) before 2013. Indian Defence Minister AK Antony has stated in the Parliament that one subsystem failed in the July 29 test of the Indo-Russian BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. While state-run DRDO claimed at the time that the test was successful, Defence Minister has officially admitted the failure of one unknown system. Read More...

India, Russia Sign Agreement for Producing Smerch Rockets

In a major boost for Indian fire power, India and Russia have signed an agreement for producing the 80 km-range Smerch rockets at ordnance factories here.
