DAC Approves 22 Cheetal Choppers For Army
With the armed forces marred by long delays in replacing the vintage Cheetah/ Chetak choppers, Defence Ministry has approved a proposal to procure around 22 Cheetal helicopters for Army. The Army is planning to deploy these choppers for supporting its high altitude operations in Ladakh and Siachen. A meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the apex Ministry body headed by Defence Minister A K Antony to decide on procurements, cleared the proposal to procure around 22 Cheetal choppers for Army, Defence Ministry officials said.
Decision on Acquiring 197 Light Utility Helicopters for the Armed Forces by Next Month
India’s prestigious helicopter acquisition plans may finally get clearer by the end of the month as the Defence Ministry scrutinizes the report submitted by a special technical committee regarding the acquisition process. The deal to procure 197 light utility helicopters for the Army and Air Force was stalled due to complaints of tender deviations. The Technical Oversight Committee has now submitted a report to the Defence ministry and the decision to either scrap or go ahead with the deal will be finalized after studying the report.
Indian Navy Planning To Issue a Request for Proposal for Procuring 56 Light Utility Helicopters
Looking to replace its ageing fleet of Chetak helicopters, the Indian Navy is planning to issue a global Request for Proposal (RFP) worth over USD 800 million for procuring 56 Light Utility Helicopters in the first quarter of next year. The Staff Qualitative requirements have been frozen and we are hoping to issue the global tender in this regard by the end of first quarter next year, Navy sources said to Defencenow.com.
Defence Ministry Urged by Armed Forces to Speed up Helicopter Acquisitions
Indian Defence Ministry is currently in the process of finalizing helicopter gunships for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the winner will either be the US-made AH 64 D Apache Longbow or the Russian Mil Mi 28 (Havoc) from Russia. The deal, exclusive of weapons and ammunition, is to be to the tune of $ 550 million and a decision is expected this month.
